What’s New: Why Greg Lauren X Alanui Is A Cut Above

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

Patch yourself up with this brilliant collab/mash-up from Italy via New Mexico.

It’s safe to say that Mr Greg Lauren is a well-connected guy. The clue is in his name – he’s the nephew of another designer that you might of heard of: Mr Ralph Lauren. But he’s also someone who knows someone. Or rather, in the case of Alanui, a couple of people – label founder Mr Nicolò Oddi and his sister Ms Carlotta Oddi, who serves as a fashion consultant and muse for the luxury Italian brand, making this, in true Shakespearean style, a tale of two households. Only rather than civil blood making civil hands unclean, these guys just cut up each other’s clothing.

While Mr Greg Lauren shares his uncle’s penchant for all things Americana, his distressed wares offer something of a glimpse of RRL for a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic future. The Oddis, meanwhile, have their own very bold vision, encompassing a unique, chopped up take on indigenous American iconography, realised in jacquard cashmere knitwear. This collection then makes for a very natural collaboration, although a mash-up is probably a better way of putting it.

Inspired by a road trip to New Mexico, the collection presents a multitude of ideas – often stitched into a single item of clothing. Expect rugged knitted cardigans and hoodies, featuring panels of frayed denim and other embellishments. Truth be told, if you’re looking for an article guaranteed to be the topic of conversation, then anything else is not a patch on these. Unless it ends up being one.
