Mr David Guetta’s Summer Playlist

Words by Mr Andrew Barker

8 June 2016

What does a globe-trotting DJ with a 55 million-strong Facebook following play to his actual friends when they drop in for a glass of fizz and some goujons?

You’d be surprised. The tracks themselves range from sublime dance classics – The Chemical Brothers’ “Galvanize”, Primal Scream’s “Come Together” – to ridiculously magnetic floor-fillers – Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over”, Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor”. Plus, he’s thrown in a few hug-a-stranger anthems such as Queen’s “We Are The Champions” and The Farm’s “All Together Now”.

After a decade on the underground scene in France, Mr Guetta’s breakthrough came when he teamed up with Will.I.Am and The Black Eyed Peas on the 2009 hit “I Gotta Feeling”, arguably the most mood-enhancing song of all time, due, in part, to the subject matter – it’s about, well, getting you in the mood. Mr Guetta didn’t include this song on the playlist but opted for The Peas’ remix of Sérgio Mendes’ “Mas Que Nada”, which found global fame in the Nike ad of 1998 when Ronaldo (the original one) and his Brazil teammates exhibited jaw-dropping skill as they dribbled their way through airport security and onto the Rio runway, eliciting a rare show of approval from a surly Mr Eric Cantona.

But what’s “Waka Waka”, Shakira’s (ridiculously catchy) theme for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, doing on there? Well, Mr Guetta has football on the brain. In between lighting up the crowds at Ibiza’s Pacha and Ushuaïa nightclubs until October, he will release “This One’s For You” featuring Ms Zara Larsson (but no Mr Elton John, natch), the official song for the Euro 2016 football championships taking place in his native France from tomorrow.

With “I Gotta Feeling” officially the biggest floor filler in the US ever, based on total number of digital sales (8.6m, since you asked), the DJ’s list will be sure to make a splash at your pool party or alfresco fiesta.
