Actor and sometime racing driving Mr Eric Bana chooses his five favourite classic cars.
You might know Mr Eric Bana as the other Banner – Bruce Banner (aka the Hulk). Or Henry Tudor in The Other Boleyn Girl. Or the avenging Avner in Munich. Or Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read in Chopper. Or Nero, the bad guy in Star Trek. Or even – bonus points – the son-in-law in The Castle.
But throughout his acting career, Mr Bana has led a double life. No, not as the Hulk, but as a racing driver, competing in some of the most challenging circuit events in his native Australia.
Growing up on the outskirts of Melbourne, near the airport – mirroring the family in his debut movie The Castle – Mr Bana honed his driving skills at a nearby drag-race track, known as the Thunderdome. “Also, there were plenty of roads with no traffic on them,” he tells MR PORTER for this week’s The Journal. “Not many cops out there. I ended up getting my racing licence very early.”
So if anyone is qualified to take a supercar out for a spin, it’s Mr Bana. But now imagine there’s room to park only five cars in his fantasy garage. Here are the classics he would most like to get his hands on.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL

1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster
“Whether it be the roadster or the gullwing, it’s not just the shape, it’s the space-frame chassis, the fuel injection… From an engineering point of view, Mercedes was just on another planet back then [in the 1950s and 1960s]. And they still perform amazingly well.”

Ferrari 275 GTB/4

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4
“The same goes for the 275 long-nose Ferrari, but it’s unobtainable, unfortunately. It sells for up to $5m (£3.5m). I was lucky enough to have got on the speedster ladder at the right time.”

Ferrari Daytona (Ferrari 365 GTB/4)

1970 Ferrari 365 GTB 4 Daytona
“The Daytona’s not to everyone’s taste but, again, I just love that silhouette.”

Porsche 911

1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

Porsche 356 Speedster

1958 Porsche 356 A Speedster
“I love the Speedster because of its simplicity. It has one of the most beautiful body shapes.”
