The best street-style shots from London Fashion Week Men’s, and how to get the look.
Anyone who has been in the vicinity of The Strand in central London over the past few days couldn’t have failed to notice the swarms of men and women dressed to the nines in the sort of apparel that has passing tourists gawping in amazement. The presence of this sartorial circus is a solid indication that London Fashion Week Men’s is in full swing.
Here at MR PORTER, we’re always keen to be the first to know what we’ll be wearing next season from the designers’ showing at the four-day event; however, any style-savvy man worth his salt knows that some of the best looks aren’t found on the runway, but among the throng of peacocking fashion cognoscenti lingering on the pavements.
While we were on our rounds at the shows, we spotted a few chaps who really hit the sartorial nail on the head, so we thought we’d give them a well-deserved moment in the style limelight – here’s our favourite five.
DO SWEAT

Sweatshirts have left the confines of the running track and are now acceptable – and in fact rather stylish – city wear. This gentleman here, caught in the obligatory “I’m on an important fashion week call” pose, shows that by insouciantly rolling your sleeves and tucking in your hem, you can give this sporty staple a hint of attitude. As for his legwear, anyone with even a passing interest in style will know that the 1990s is back in a big way, making his stonewashed jeans right on point. Not only are they a summery alternative to dark denim, but they also have that all-important vintage panache.

HEDGE YOUR BETS

Even in summer and with the assistance of supposedly advanced meteorological apps, there’s no way of telling for certain what the weather’s going to throw at you in the Big Smoke. But if you’re the type who feels burdened by lugging an umbrella about, then a fetching raincoat is the way to go. This gentleman’s stone trench is a true wardrobe classic, but he’s given it a fresh, 21st-century spin – namely by styling it with sporty side-striped trousers, comfortable Converse and a slick cross-body bag. This is polished athleisure dressing at its best.

OPT FOR A SUMMER SUIT

This elegant gentleman proves that you don’t need to strip down to base layers to stay cool in the city: instead don lightweight summer tailoring. A breathable linen or cotton-seersucker two-piece is a smart way to beat the heat in town, without have to resort to shorts and flip-flops. The vibrant madras check shirt lends a sense of ease to the outfit, offsetting the formality of the suit, which could look a touch starchy otherwise.

LET YOURSELF BE SUEDE

Seeing as style icon Mr Nick Wooster has his own collaborative label – Wooster + Lardini – it’s no surprise that street-style photographers jump over each other to get a shot of him whenever he’s in town for LFWM. In this picture, Mr Wooster shows us just how to rock the summer suede trend, and does so with aplomb in this dusty-pink number. His eye-catching printed trousers break up the accompanying solid shades, while his clean-cut white sneakers provide a neutral and, more importantly, comfortable base – much needed when you’re dashing from one show to another.

KNIT YOURSELF OUT

MR PORTER’s very own client relations manager, Mr Joe Ottaway, proves that just because you’re wearing a tie, it doesn’t mean that the rest of your outfit needs to be stuffy. Mr Ottaway’s knitted design is a more laid-back choice than a woven silk style, but equally elegant. The casual air of this striped accessory makes it an ideal companion to his neutral chinos and classic-yet-cool suede jacket. We particularly like the retro colour palette of off-white, beige and brown. Full marks, we say.
