January is a rather glum month for some for obvious reasons, but here at MR PORTER, we have been reeling with excitement. For one, we’ve finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel (read: the end of what’s known to be the most depressing month of the year). For another, said month has signalled the comeback of fashion and awards seasons. Which can only mean one thing: a sheer breadth of celebrities and style setters showed up, showed out and showed off their good sartorial judgement. Yes, some in sheer shirts. From Messrs Austin Butler and Mark Ronson’s sharp red-carpet attire to Mr Jeremy Allen White’s comfort fit, these are the seven famous men who delivered the goods.
01. Mr Jeremy Allen White

The ever-evolving art of complementary dressing with your partner just got a fresh new couple in its club. The Bear actor Mr Jeremy Allen White was out and about with the singer Rosalía in matching, and harmonising, black outfits. We like the concept of layering two jackets – the leather bomber adds some dimension over the track jacket, while the loose black trousers keep the casual vibe with the worn-out lace-up boots. The silver signet ring is a well-thought-out finishing touch.

02. Mr Austin Butler

Mr Austin Butler has finally shed the “King of Rock and Roll” persona and has adopted the title of “King of Sleek Suiting”. We crowned him as one of the best-dressed men of 2023 for this very reason. And, just one month into 2024, he’s continuing to prove his credentials. The actor's tailoring soared once again at the Masters Of The Air premiere as he took to the red carpet in a light brown and subtle blue pinstripe double-breasted suit from Burberry. It’s sophisticated, understated and exactly what we’ve come to expect from the Hollywood superstar. And with the start of the Dune: Part Two press tour just around the corner, expect to see some more of his tailoring prowess very soon.

03. Mr Kingsley Ben-Adir

His three most recent film credits – playing Messrs Malcolm X and Bob Marley, either side of, er, Basketball Ken in Barbie – should tell you that Mr Kingsley Ben-Adir clearly doesn’t feel overly burdened when it comes to tackling icons. But what of a pairing that has challenged even the greatest of talents? Namely, double denim. Here, the British actor makes light work of a look that has felled many a man. His take comes in an unbroken indigo that looks as fresh as his hair, worn fully buttoned, with mighty cuffs and brown horsebit loafers, for point of difference – although all from Gucci. It’s all in the details. Or, as Marley put it, every little thing is gonna be alright.

04. Mr Donald Glover

In London to promote his new spy comedy series, Mr & Mrs Smith, Mr Donald Glover stepped out to confirm what we at MR PORTER already well knew – it is still very much big coat season. With this fine wool number, the moustache, slightly flared trousers, polished black leather stack-heeled boots – and is that a vest poking out underneath? – we’re getting hints of suave 1970s detective. Our one note? He could try tying his (admittedly very lovely) scarf a little more artfully. Fortunately, we have tips for that. One hopes that he has some Donald Gloves on inside those pockets, as it’s been nippy around the city this month.

05. Mr Mark Ronson

“Doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I’m always number two. No one knows how hard I tried.” So sings Mr Ryan Gosling in “I’m Just Ken”, the pivotal musical number for everyone’s favourite plastic blond. As the man behind the film’s soundtrack picked up the award for Best Original Song at the Astra Film Awards, there was nothing consigning Mr Mark Ronson to number two spot, in what he does or how he dresses. That 1970s suiting he loves so much – wide lapels, big boxy double-breasted jacket, wide-leg trousers – was in perfect harmony with the dagger-collar white shirt and “nightclub carpet” patterned tie. It’s a 10 in our eyes.

06. Mr Pierre de Maere

This month’s AW24 shows provided plenty in the way of style thrills. On the various catwalks, sure, but no less on the streets, with a swathe of well-dressed (and well-known) attendees from around the globe. Our eyes were all on Mr Pierre De Maere, one of Belgium’s most exciting up-and-coming musical talents du jour – if there’s one right way to do workwear in 2024, this cobalt blue look from Sacai’s SS24 collection would surely be it. The chore jacket is reinvented with an upturned collar, while the trousers are baggy and slightly longer than usual, so leave it to the leather boots to elevate the whole look.

07. Mr Tommaso de Benedictis

Model, curator and It-boy Mr Tommaso de Benedictis turned up at the Gucci show in Milan looking like the epitome of the New Gucci. Casual, clean, beautiful coat, incredible shoes: these are the components of a perfect outfit. The jeans hit right at the ankle and the sweater cuts down low Italian chef’s kiss. Cheek bones that can cut glass don’t hurt if you can swing it.
