How To Upgrade Your Knitwear Ahead Of Winter

Words by Emma Pradella

3 November 2023

Autumn is in full swing, and the arrival of chilly days calls for new knitwear. With the winter solstice less than two months away, the inevitable sartorial dilemma of “What on Earth do I wear now?” is on the horizon. Which means it’s time to get your wardrobe prepped and ready before the cold hits.

Sumptuous, fuzzy and substantial knits are one of the few things that can make up for the general seasonal grimness. They’re also one of winter’s greatest sartorial essentials, be it for their natural warming qualities or their power to add texture and pattern to just about any outfit. To make it easier for you to brush up on the art of layering, we’ve rounded up our favourite knits on MR PORTER’s virtual shelves – just read on.

01. The exclusive Marni mohair-blend sweater

Italian brand Marni has become synonymous with colour-blocked, fuzzy mohair knits, which this crewneck exemplifies perfectly. Exclusively available at MR PORTER, it’s designed to fit slightly oversized, so it’ll be easy to layer over other knits or T-shirts.

02. The Casablanca zip-through cardigan

With its silky shirts and sport-inspired capsules, Casablanca might have mastered the art of summer dressing. But we can reassure you that the French brand does winter-wear pretty well, too. Just look at this cardigan – the double-texture construction will keep you cosy and very stylish.

03. The Brunello Cucinelli cashmere rollneck

Mr Brunello Cucinelli started his eponymous brand with a vision for dyed cashmere, so it’s only right we include one of the label’s knits in our edit. Not just any knit, though – one that will both feel soft to the touch and add some Fair Isle ruggedness to your winter fits.

04. The RRL shawl-collar cardigan

Inspired by Mr Ralph Lauren’s Colorado ranch, RRL’s casualwear range is the best way to hop on the Americana trend without too much fuss. The swatches this cardigan is patchworked from are woven with classic westernwear motifs.

05. The AMI PARIS knitted vest

If you need something with a little less coverage, opt for a knitted vest, such as this one from AMI PARIS. It’ll allow you to be a tad more playful with layers and show off whatever you’re wearing underneath. The chunky handle – achieved with a rib-knitted blend of alpaca – ensures you don’t have to compromise on warmth.

06. The AMIRI cashmere-blend hoodie

LA label AMIRI draws inspiration from the Californian subcultures that defined its founder’s youth. This hoodie, for instance, recalls the ones worn by 1970s and 1980s surfers, but is made with city dressers in mind.

07. The Mr P. polo shirt

Mr P. isn’t about trends, it’s about timeless staples that you can rely on year-around. Take this polo shirt – it’s knitted from thermo-regulating, wrinkle-resistant merino wool, which makes it suitable for any season.
