THE JOURNAL

Get in the mood this season with these olfactory delights.
London-based perfumer Ms Azzi Glasser has up until now been mostly known for her bespoke fragrances, sought out by Hollywood and famous types such as Messrs Jude Law, Orlando Bloom and Stephen Fry. As you might guess from the word “bespoke”, the creation of one’s own personal fragrance is not an experience that is particularly easy on the wallet (it costs around £15,000). Happily though, Ms Glasser has recently decided to release “The Perfumer’s Story”, a range of choice scents plucked from her back catalogue, making possible a more casual entry into her sublime olfactory world, which arrive on MR PORTER this week. What makes these fragrances so special is their heady, suggestive depth as well as their sense of narrative. Unisex fragrances like Tuscan Suede and Sequoia Wood evoke exotic locales and richly dressed interiors. Mr Vetivert is a contemporary men’s cologne but with an intriguingly smoky heart that subtly hints at a spot of bad behaviour. Across the range, Ms Glasser leans towards notes that are mysterious, musky and woody, making them particularly suitable for the long winter nights when such scents come to the fore. Scroll down for our recommendations on how to use them in the coming months:

FOR A CRISP WINTER WALK

Master Cedar
This is one of the lighter scents in Ms Glasser’s oeuvre, with its spicy top accord of elemi, pimento and bay, and a mellow base of myrrh, oudh and amber. Overall, it’s perfect for day-to-day use: subtle, but with an intriguing incense-like quality that has a creative feel to it. You’ll find it an invigorating and warming option for a wintry walk at the weekend. Just make sure you pair it with the requisite layers – there’s no point smelling wonderful if you’re also freezing.

FOR A NIGHT ON THE TILES

Grey Myrrh
Grey Myrrh is a more potent and sensual scent, created by Ms Glasser to evoke the scent of a man who has just emerged from the shower and is ready to take on the world. There’s therefore a rich base of “skin sensual musk” here, combined with notes of water, earth, cypress leaves, cassis and armoise. The result is a charmingly overpowering concoction that is perfect for spritzing oneself with as you leave the house for a party or date. Don’t be alarmed if everyone starts leaning in that little bit too close.

FOR THE MEMBERS’ CLUB

Old Books
Old Books is a wonderful encapsulation of what makes Ms Glasser’s fragrances so unique. Designed to evoke the feeling of happening upon some treasured old manuscript in an attic or library, it has a rich, tangy and almost dusty fragrance, combining frankincense with warm patchouli, elemi and cedar. It’s designed to be characterful and unique, and certainly lives up to its inspiration in that it feels particularly suited to moody interiors. Try taking it out to dinner or your local members’ club, and enjoy the ineffable air of enigmatic charm that it will inevitably cultivate.
