THE JOURNAL

This week, the second men’s major of the golf season, the PGA Championship, tees off on the Ocean Course at the at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. With the wind from the Atlantic Ocean whipping across Mr Pete Dye’s devilish course design, the best players in the world are set for a serious workout – not that this will phase many, as over the past 10 years, golf’s youthful and athletic image has been built in gymnasiums and with an army of personal trainers in tow.
The game’s leading lights have become lean, toned and explosively strong, capable of generating ridiculous clubhead speeds and sending the ball out further than many people go on holiday. And, over that same period, G/Fore, the golf brand founded by Mr Mossimo Giannulli in Los Angeles in 2011, has tapped into this spirit of disruption by designing apparel, footwear and accessories that reflect the new breeze blowing through a sport that has long been perceived as being staid and old-fashioned.
G/Fore started out making golf gloves in a vibrant palette of colours. These AA-grade cabretta leather gloves still set a benchmark, offering great fit and feel. The popularity of the gloves laid the foundations for expansion into shoes and apparel that draw inspiration from art, architecture and modern design, but also doff a cap to golf’s traditions.
Launching on MR PORTER this week, G/Fore explores the elusive sweet spot between performance-wear and statement dressing on the golf course. The vibe is youthful, playful and distinctly athleisure in feel, with the shoes fast emulating the golf gloves as best in class.

The MG4+ is a case in point, a smart update on the sneaker trend that has dominated golf shoe design since Mr Fred Couples first ambled across the manicured acres of Augusta National in 2010 in what looked a pair of canvas plimsolls. Lightweight, waterproof and designed to make a good walk even better, this is a performance shoe with serious contemporary chops.
Those tuning into the coverage from Kiawah Island this week will doubtless feel the pull of the golf course. Participation in golf has surged over the past 12 months as newcomers have woken up to its appeal as a socially distanced sport played in the great outdoors. The toned physiques of those competing for the Wanamaker Trophy will provide further proof of golf’s new, energetic image. With G/Fore, the only question is how much you want to dial it up.
