Introducing Behind The Suit

The thing about the suit is that no two tailoring brands, and their respective designs, are the same. Geographical and cultural influences, among others, make each different in multiple ways. This can range from the style of the chest pocket (the Italians like ones that resemble a little boat). The width of the lapels (the French favour big and bold). A sleek-yet-modern approach (unsurprisingly, the Swedes are proponents of this). Or the padding in the shoulders (the British have always been known to bolster their jackets; certain American brands like little to none).

As a result of these intricacies and idiosyncrasies, the world of tailoring – and the brands offered by MR PORTER – presents something for everyone and every situation. It allows men to be able to look their very best by wearing the suit that suits them best.

Coinciding with our celebration of summer tailoring, and with an eye on the upcoming wedding season, Behind The Suit is a celebration of the tailored garments, craftsmanship and style that help you rise to the occasion. It aims to showcase the details that you perhaps might not see but will certainly feel when wearing high-quality tailoring from four of our favourite brands.

We start with Thom Sweeney, which hails from London, then travel to Husbands in Paris, before visiting Saman Amel in Stockholm and finishing with J. Mueser in New York City.

Thom Sweeney

Next year marks 20 years of the British tailoring brand Thom Sweeney. In that time, it has transitioned from a small, two-man bespoke tailor into a globally recognised name for luxury ready-to-wear menswear, with stores in London, New York, Los Angeles and Miami. And it’s only just getting started.
