THE JOURNAL

Some inventions conjured up by humankind are immortal. There are concepts such as, say, the wheel, that have lasted since time immemorial. Indeed, such is its unimprovable nature, it is the subject of a well-worn saying about keeping successful things as they are. Likewise, denim feels as though it has always been, and it always will be. And given its hard-wearing qualities, and cool credentials, it’s always a failsafe investment where style is concerned. But, unlike the wheel, denim does lend itself to reinvention. And we’d argue that adding a little spice only increases its indefinite lifespan. With some exciting new examples of denim on site today, we thought we would use our expertise, gather them up and give some tips on how to wear them. This isn’t the first time we’ve done this but, well, if it ain’t broke…

The star-spangled CELINE HOMME denim jacket

We’re not suggesting you straddle a Harley-Davidson XR-750 and attempt jumping over a series of buses. But, well, if you were to, while wearing this, you’d at least look the part. A striking piece, the hard-working blouson style and hard-wearing denim fabric deployed here should survive any number of stunts unscathed – whatever you decide to do in it.

The wide-leg distressed KAPITAL shorts

The knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone: a concept illustrated brilliantly by these raw denim shorts from cult brand KAPITAL. Made at the brand’s workshop in Okayama (AKA Japan’s denim capital), they have a wide, baggy fit, perfect for those warm summer days.

The skinny-fit AMIRI jeans

No denim edit is complete without a pair of jeans. Or better yet, without a pair of deconstructed jeans designed by the denim master himself, Mr Mike Amiri. Heavily faded, whiskered and distressed, this skinny-fit MX1 pair has been ripped and repaired with signature bandana-print panels.

The Givenchy messenger bag

Made in Italy from bleach logo-embossed denim and detailed with a U-lock buckle and silver-tone branding, Givenchy’s denim messenger bag is the ideal size for storing your daily essentials. And while even the most devout denimhead might struggle in selvedge jeans during the warmer months, with this, you’ll be able to retain your title as a virtuoso all summer long.

The Officine Générale Western shirt

You usually have to wait a while for your denim to wear in. However, the Felix shirt from Officine Générale is halfway there, thanks to its already faded, stonewashed look. Taking its cues from the Western style, the shirt is finished with topstitched yoke panels, flap pockets and handy snap closures. Avoid pairing this with a wide-brimmed hat and you’re good to go.
