THE JOURNAL

There are certain items of clothing that have existed in our collective wardrobe and sartorial lexicon ever since we can remember. Think about a pair of jeans, or a classic denim jacket – those items that never truly go out of style. The common denominator? The utilitarian fabric that gives them a laid-back, hardwearing, endlessly cool appeal.
But the enduring allure of denim doesn’t mean it can’t get a makeover every now and then – just look at the SS23 runways for proof. From JW Anderson and AMIRI to CELINE HOMME and Acne Studios, our favourite brands have all presented exciting, fresh updates on the classics. Here are a few highlights that went straight to the top of our Wish List.
01.
The twisted JW Anderson workwear jeans

Make your jeans department that bit more fun with JW Anderson’s deconstructed pair. The back pocket and stamped leather tab on the front along with the diagonal seams and twisted waistband will bring a point of difference to your everyday looks.
02.
The artsy CHERRY LA jacket

03.
The oversized CELINE HOMME shirt

CELINE HOMME’s denim shirt is designed for a loose, oversized fit, so it’s perfect to layer over T-shirts or lightweight knits. The heavy wash means it works just as well with tonal denim as it does with darker washes.
04.
The everyday TOM FORD jacket

Denim usually takes a while to break in, but the garment-wash treatment on this TOM FORD jacket has done the hard work for you. The burnished copper buttons nod to classic trucker styles.
05.
The distressed Gallery Dept. jeans

LA-based brand Gallery Dept. was founded to re-purpose vintage garments – its DIY approach to design is particularly evident in these jeans. Each pair is hand-finished by brand founder and contemporary artist Mr Josué Thomas, so no two pairs are ever the same.
06.
The short-sleeved Sacai shirt

There’s no better way to welcome the arrival of warmer days than with some weather-appropriate clothes, and Sacai’s short-sleeved shirt is a great example. Add it to your rotation to break up the printed styles.
07.
The straight-leg Acne Studios jeans

Denim is one of the things Acne Studios does best. Before expanding into a full ready-to-wear brand, the label started off with 100 pairs of raw denim jeans, which founder Mr Jonny Johansson gave away to friends and family. Don’t mind if we suggest this pair, cut for a straight, slightly flared fit.
