THE JOURNAL

Which of these standout jackets will you choose to wear this weekend?.
It’s Friday, which means only one thing. No, not the fact that the weekend starts tomorrow. It does, of course, mean that. Undoubtedly so. But more importantly (probably), Friday means that MR PORTER has lots of fresh new products landing on site. Hurray (etc)! So, what’s in today’s arrivals? Here at MR P HQ, we’re talking about three specific jackets new on site (give us a break – how do you pass the time till Saturday?)
Each of these jackets represents various degrees of daring. Which one would you wear? Are you a go-to-hell kind of guy? Or a master of minimalism? Whichever it is, find out what to wear with them below.

Every time we have an influx of new product on site, there is usually at least one piece that stands out. Today, that piece is a linen-canvas denim jacket/blazer hybrid by Junya Watanabe + Levi’s. Quite a mouthful, hey? Quite an eyeful, too. The strikingly patterned patch on the front comes courtesy of Dutch label Vlisco – a major supplier of fabric to Africa since the 19th century – which collaborated with Junya and Levi’s on the Faraway collection this jacket was made for. We rather like this piece. But that doesn’t mean it is easy to wear. As Mr Theodore Roosevelt said, “Nothing in the world is worth having unless it means effort, pain, difficulty…” Be cautious and go pieces that are unfussy, and slim fitting.

Now to a new piece from everyone’s favourite niche Parisian brand Officine Generale (or Officine to those who know). Far more sober than our friend above, this formal jacket makes use of a delightfully subtle navy check, which will add a bit of irreverence to your smart attire. It’s not going to shock and offend, whether you wear it for work or at the weekend, but it’s a bit more fun than your usual, albeit classic, navy blazer. Since you’re dipping your toe into the crazy world of smart pattern – rein things in with some pared-back chinos and an Oxford shirt.

Much like the Junya Watanabe + Levi’s piece above, this is a workwear-inspired jacket created using good old denim. However, as you might have already gathered, it is a rather different beast, all things considered. A master of minimalism, it is Ms Margaret Howell at her relaxed, pared-back best. Unlike our friend above, you are not going to get comments about the provenance of this piece. It’s most distinguishing feature is its elongated silhouette. Indeed, it can’t really decide whether it’s a blazer or a jacket. Which, we think, makes it a perfect piece of outwear as the weather starts to improve.
