Here at MR PORTER, the new year means one thing: new menswear and accessories to pore over. We like to take this time to sort through our wardrobes, refine them and add a few new treats to keep us looking sharp for the last drag of winter. Thanks to the weather in our part of the world, we’ll be spending a lot of time sporting boots. So, a good, hard-wearing pair that also looks great is top of the list. Luckily, plenty of brand-new styles have recently hit the shelves. And – being the nice people we are – we have taken the time to pick out some of our favourites to share.
01. The Brunello Cuccinelli suede hiking boots
When it comes to luxury style, it can be argued that the Italians do it best – and when it comes to Italian luxury style, Brunello Cucinelli in turn does it best. This pair of elegant chocolate suede boots are inspired by classic hiking styles, featuring tarnished brass-tone eyelets, a sturdy lug sole and contrast stitching and lining. Team with complementary tones in tactile fabrics (and perhaps an après-ski espresso) for a truly sophisticated look.
02. The Bottega Veneta leather biker boots
A pair of versatile and durable black leather boots is a non-negotiable when building your winter wardrobe. Our preference for 2024 is a contemporary take on a biker style, like this pair from the Italian leather craftsmanship expert Bottega Veneta. Polished leather, a chunky sole, convenient zips and the brand’s signature intrecciato weave make them a no-fail choice for a fresh, everyday outfit.
03. The Tod’s shearling-lined chukka boots
Not every day is a day for rugged leather, though. For those down days and casual occasions, try a desert or chukka boot. The Italian brand Tod’s has been making high-quality footwear since it was first founded as a small cobbler’s workshop in 1900. Those years of experience have been channelled into these soft suede boots, complete with comfortable shearling lining to keep your toes warm and a thick rubber sole dotted with Tod’s signature pebbles to avoid any slippery situations.
04. The elevated Loro Piana hiking boots
Another brand that understands quality textiles is Loro Piana, with roots as a family of wool merchants in the early 1800s. Since then, the company has gone on to become the world’s foremost cashmere processor. No surprise, then, that its hiking boots favour super-soft materials, combining supple tan suede and fine white shearling. A rubber trim above the sole and high, close-fitting ankles provide extra protection from the elements.
05. The John Lobb Chelsea boots
Handmade since 1849, John Lobb’s footwear is the last word in traditional English shoemaking. These timeless Chelsea boots are crafted on the brand’s 8695 last from full-grain leather and feature elasticated sides and a Goodyear-welted sole for comfort and durability. The tasteful almond toe and slim profile make them a great choice for work or smarter occasions as well as day-to-day socialising.
