THE JOURNAL

The bags are revolting this season. Fed up with being labelled “finishing touches”, playing second fiddle to the heftier pieces in our wardrobes, they’re making a grab for our attention with punchy hues, unexpected textures and surrealist silhouettes. Not for minimalist tastes, admittedly; if words such as “leopard print” and “patent leather” are enough to make you break out in a nervous sweat, then best to look away now. But if, on the other hand, you’re hoping to have a little more fun with fashion this new year – and life’s too short not to – then these seven conversation-starting, statement-making accessories are a brilliant place to start.
01.
The CELINE HOMME leopard-print faux fur messenger bag

It appears Mr Hedi Slimane’s CELINE HOMME has endeavoured to pack as much flair into one 7in accessory as is humanly possible with this quirky Boite messenger bag. As if the leopard print wasn’t enough of statement, it’s been stamped with the brand’s bold black lettering and cast in a delightfully fuzzy faux fur that you’ll struggle to keep your hands off.
02.
The Bottega Veneta padded shell messenger

If you thought you’d seen every possible iteration of the intrecciato weave (squidgy, shrunken, supersized), think again. This season, Bottega Veneta’s brand signature reconfigures itself once more in the shape of this padded messenger in a grass-green utilitarian shell fabric, which you can pair with its coordinating track jacket, shorts and gilet.
03.
The Gucci leather-trimmed monogrammed messenger

Gucci has been whipping up cult accessories since before most of the MR PORTER team were born. In short, they’re pretty good at it. Case in point: this pint-sized monogrammed messenger bag, which shows off the heritage brand’s impeccable craftsmanship – and the wearer’s impeccable taste.
04.
The LOEWE Puzzle mini leather belt bag

We’re calling it: the LOEWE Puzzle, which first popped up in 2015, has officially proved its longevity and earned its spot in the It-bag hall of fame. Which is to say, it’s a pretty wise investment if you’re looking for a bag that’ll see you through multiple seasons – and this hands-free version in a bold orange promises maximum style payoff.
05.
The Marni printed shell tote bag

Marni may have garnered hypebeast buzz due to its fuzzy mohair knits, but newcomers to the Italian label should take note: its accessories are not to be ignored. We’re fans of this artsy spin on its brightly coloured shell tote bags, which are pleasingly spacious and eye-catching to boot.
06.
JW Anderson printed leather pouch

After last year’s endlessly talked-about Pigeon Clutch, Mr Jonathan Anderson continues his exploration of sartorial surrealism with this calf-leather cap bag. It’s brimming with quirky features, including an array of “stickers” and a long detachable strap so you sling it around your neck. And while it may not boast much real estate – about enough room for a phone, keys and wallet, we’d say – it’s got plenty of personality to make up for it.
07.
The Acne Studios faux-leather logo messenger

Time to give purple the love it deserves, says Acne Studios. This season, the famously irreverent Stockholm label is making the case for the most overlooked colour on the spectrum with this glossy faux-patent leather bag that’s been stamped with their tongue-in-cheek logo – and we’re inclined to get on board.
