The bags are revolting this season. Not for minimalist tastes, admittedly; if words such as “leopard print” and “patent leather” are enough to make you break out in a nervous sweat, then best to look away now. But if, on the other hand, you’re hoping to have a little more fun with fashion this new year – and life’s too short not to – then these seven conversation-starting, statement-making accessories are a brilliant place to start.

As if the leopard print wasn’t enough of statement, it’s been stamped with the brand’s bold black lettering and cast in a delightfully fuzzy faux fur that you’ll struggle to keep your hands off.

If you thought you’d seen every possible iteration of the intrecciato weave (squidgy, shrunken, supersized), think again. This season, Bottega Veneta’s brand signature reconfigures itself once more in the shape of this padded messenger in a grass-green utilitarian shell fabric, which you can pair with its coordinating track jacket, shorts and gilet.

After last year’s endlessly talked-about Pigeon Clutch, Mr Jonathan Anderson continues his exploration of sartorial surrealism with this calf-leather cap bag. It’s brimming with quirky features, including an array of “stickers” and a long detachable strap so you sling it around your neck. And while it may not boast much real estate – about enough room for a phone, keys and wallet, we’d say – it’s got plenty of personality to make up for it.

Time to give purple the love it deserves, says Acne Studios. This season, the famously irreverent Stockholm label is making the case for the most overlooked colour on the spectrum with this glossy faux-patent leather bag that’s been stamped with their tongue-in-cheek logo – and we’re inclined to get on board.
