Celebrate American Independence Day in true patriotic style with these red, white and blue key pieces.
If you Google “Independence Day” at the moment, you’re much more likely to find out about Mr Roland Emmerich’s new blockbuster Independence Day: Resurgence (currently 33 per cent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) than the actual holiday itself, which of course celebrates the sovereignty and splendour of the United States of America. But don’t let Hollywood spoil your fun: the annual celebration, as ever, should be full of eating, drinking (a Snow Peak hip flask will help with this), fireworks and, especially given the tumultuous events of the past two weeks, the opportunity for Americans to rejoice in the fact that they are no longer British. But what to wear for this moment of glory? This is where MR PORTER comes in…
UP ABOVE
Yes, there will be a lot of red, white and blue flying around this 4 July, but there are more understated ways to wear these star-spangled colours. This shirt from Gitman Vintage not only has the USP of being exclusive to MR PORTER, it’s a rare Independance Day shirt that, thanks to its subtle plaid design, you will actually be able to wear the other 364 days of the year. Play up the vintage feel with a pair of nicely 1950s-styled Clubmaster sunglasses from Ray-Ban – another American institution.
ON THE WRIST
Wearing a watch by Shinola is a great way to celebrate the resilience of the American spirit. Since the brand launched in 2011, it has pioneered a new kind of made-in-the-US excellence (and created many new jobs for American workers) via its dedicated manufacturing facilities in Detroit, where all its products are born. This particular model comes with a leather strap from Chicago’s renowned Horween Leather Company, and is attractively embellished in contrast stitching for a sturdy, workwear vibe. Start with this and then pile on a bracelet from Isaia – it is party time, after all.

Ok, we’re tired of being subtle – there’s nothing more patriotic on MR PORTER than these Rivieras lightweight shoes, which are also comfortable, incredibly easy to slip on and off, and will put you in good stead for your next holiday (the cotton mesh fabric is ideal for both beach- and pool-side, as well as any kind of warm weather). Pair them with some chino shorts from Theory and head straight for your nearest barbecue, armed with Frescobol Carioca’s chic bat and ball set.
