THE JOURNAL

The accessories you can give as presents without a receipt – one size fits all.
There are few better ways to get in the festive mood than buying gifts. It really encapsulates this magical time of year, doesn’t it? Unpicking the complicated politics of your inner circle to work out the minimum amount of people you have to get something for. Carefully budgeting to ensure you’ll still be able to buy yourself that sweater you’ve had your eye on. Frantically running around shops on London’s Oxford Street on Christmas Eve because you left everything till the last minute. Again. Ah yes, the magic of gift giving.
It doesn’t have to be like this, of course. There is another way. And that way is the way of the MR PORTER wallets and bags gift guide. Why, you may ask, is this the best method to get your gift shopping done? Firstly, with our unparalleled delivery service, you barely have to lift finger. Well, apart from to click on “ADD TO BAG”, of course. Secondly, with a fine wallet or bag from MR PORTER, not only are you getting an item the giftee is bound to love, you’re circumventing the perennial problem of sizing. Nothing ruins a present exchange like having to ask for the receipt so you can return it for the size above. So, with this in mind, we put together a collection of our favourite wallets and bags – perfect to give as gifts this holiday season, whether you’re buying for that special someone (or yourself).
BAGS
We can probably trace the birth of the backpack back (try saying that after a few ales) to 1938 and the brand Gerry Outdoors, who introduced the first example with zip-up compartments. Then, its primary use was for camping and hiking. It wasn’t until around the early 1970s that a nylon bag was made light enough so that students – the most common users of the backpack – could lug their books and personal effects around in them. Nowadays, far from being seen solely in school corridors and on the side of mountains, the backpack has broken into high fashion, being an element of many contemporary designer collections. This bag, by Berluti, is one of the more refined examples. Crafted in smooth and polished leather it reclaims the term “bag for life”. Tote bags have had a bit of a renaissance in a similar way. Gone are the days of them being scruffy, cotton things that hang on the back of your door. Brands such as Saint Laurent make them in full grain leather, and roomy enough size to hold your Macbook (and more).
WALLETS
There can be no sounder investment than spending money on something safe and stylish within which to store your money. So, if you or someone you know is in the market for such a thing, look no further than these fine wallets by George Cleverley and Thom Browne. If you prefer something a little more traditional, try the former, made by a British brand which has a pedigree heritage in shoemaking (and you can therefore rely on when it comes to leather goods such as wallets). Alternatively, show your stripes when retrieving your cash with Thome Browne’s version of the wallet. Made in Italy, this is a slightly trimmer money holder and, crafted from pebble grain leather, a more tactile proposition to boot – with the brand’s trademark stripes subtly secured inside the fold.
CARDHOLDERS
In a world of Monzo and Bitcoin, no one carries any actual, physical money anymore, right? So, you may well be in the market for something that is more catered to cards rather than that passé paper (now plastic) and metal we once called “money”. If so, you may as well invest in the best. And for leather accessories things do not get much better than those made by Bottega Veneta. The intrecciato woven technique visible on this cardholder is a signature of the brand, which was founded near Venice in 1966, and will certainly set you apart from the crowd when it comes to paying the bill. Alternatively, go for something a little more discreet with Common Projects’ pared-back cardholder. Super slim and made in tan, this is for those who don’t need to keep much in their pockets (or just wear very slim-fitting jeans).
