A Groom’s Guide To Dressing For The Wedding

These days, weddings can last for days, not hours, requiring grooms to plan out several outfits to wear over the course of a long weekend. Sound daunting? It is. Weddings are no joke.

My partner and I have been together for 12 years, if you can believe it. (I know, I look so young.) We met when I was 19, bought a flat together seven years later and got engaged right before the pandemic. We’re getting married later this year and we’re making a thing of it. Why not? It’s a milestone. We’re not having kids (we got a pug instead), we’ve already bought the home. This is our moment to go for it and celebrate.

The wedding is going to be a three-day affair out in the English countryside – meaning that I have three events for which I need to choose outfits. As a person, I’m not keen on a lot of attention, but as a stylist, I view this as a pure opportunity to show off. There won’t be any brides dressed in white, so someone has to bring a tear to the guests’ eyes.

The vibe of the wedding venue is very much farmhouse chic. It’s rustic, but I’m doing my best to bring some elegance and just a touch of camp. Our groomsmen and groomsmaids are going to be wearing all black (though they do not have to match) and I’m hoping my guests use this as an opportunity to get dressed up. The dress code is yet to be announced, but we’re thinking something along the lines of cocktail formal – I will be very disappointed if anyone shows up in shorts or a sundress (if you’re reading this, friends and family, please take note).

If you’re having a three-day wedding this season, or simply need some inspiration, hopefully my picks can help you find your way.

We’re having a Jewish wedding, so the three-day affair begins on Saturday night, when we are hosting a welcome party for family and the wedding party about 10 minutes away from the wedding venue. We haven’t been to a wedding since the pandemic and neither have a lot of our friends and family, so we wanted to do more than just a wedding that lasted a few hours – we’re hosting a few events to make it more of a thing. There will be a tent, trestle tables and a vegetarian Italian caterer. It’s BYOB, so it’s a bit more casual than the wedding.

As such, I’ve chosen this Blue Blue Japan suit, which is unlined and made from a gorgeously textured black and navy fabric. I’m hoping it will be a lovely warm evening, but I’m adding a little scarf just in case.

The shoes may end up being the talking point of the night, and that’s OK by me. We’ve got some family members who are quite conservative, so my hooved Maison Margiela shoes might shock them.

That night, we will be staying at Birch (Selsdon) and I will be getting ready for the ceremony there the next day. My friend, hairstylist and makeup artist Ms Natalie Shafii, will be transforming me and hopefully making me look fresher than ever.

For the wedding I’ve decided to go all black with this Givenchy suit, a TOM FORD shirt and SAINT LAURENT boots. I like the idea of wearing a slim-fit suit, and I’m very particular about the cut and length of the sleeves.

Because I’m a bit of a short king, I like to have my cuffs floating above my wrists and my trousers floating above my ankles. And I’m going for a slightly heeled boot to make me look a little taller.

I know all-black and high heels might seem a little… unusual for a wedding, but we very unashamedly love Las Vegas – there is something quite trashy and glamorous about camping up a suit this way.

My plan is to get drunk, because I will be very, very nervous, but not so wasted that I’ll forget everything. I would ideally like to be buzzed throughout the whole day, so I suppose I’m also planning on being fairly hungover on Monday. This is why I’m opting for a loose and relaxed outfit for the day after. Roomy trousers, roomy shirt and a touch of glam on the shoes – these JW Andersons have rhinestones all over them (another nod to Vegas).

Sunday brunch will just be family, so I won’t be trying to impress anyone. I will, however, be trying to keep it together by wearing sunglasses from my favourite brand Jacques Marie Mage. If there’s a moment during a wedding weekend to let go a little, this would be it.

Wish me luck for the big day. I’m going to need it.

Well groomed
