Just In: Men’s Summer Wardrobe Essentials

The Breton T-shirt and swimming shorts you need for a spring vacation – plus the bag to pack them in.

Here in Britain, a country mild of manner and climate, a relatively minor change in the weather can genuinely warrant front page news. To our neighbours on the continent, we Brits must come across a little histrionic in this regard, but what can we say, we’re easily pleased when it comes to the heat – throw us a little sunshine and a pub garden, and all descends into Aperol spritz-slurping entropy. Sartorially speaking, however, the warm weather often catches us off-guard, and the sweaters and jackets that populate our wardrobes for most of the year are no longer appropriate (or comfortable), and so we’re left at sea wondering what on earth to wear to look and feel cool in the heat. Thankfully, the What’s New section at MR PORTER has just been hit with a fresh wave of summer-ready items that will make sure you’re looking sharp when the sun’s out. Including a timeless Breton T-shirt from the new Mr P. collection to some stretch-cotton shorts from Isaia, these clothes might not make front page news, but they’re perfect for enjoying the sunshine in.

A Breton T-shirt is, frankly, one of the best summer items a man can wear, and this one from Mr P. is, if we say so ourselves, a perfect iteration. It will look great under a shirt when it gets chilly, and its stripes will make you look broader in the shoulders. Pair it with these linen shorts from Paul Smith to keep everything cool in the sun.

These twill cotton shorts from Isaia are finished with a small red coral charm – a symbol of good luck in Naples. They’ll look great with a pair of boat shoes or espadrilles, and a colourful shirt like this pink surfboard leaf print one from Faherty.

If you have not yet been graced with the sunshine – or worse, if you have but have no choice but to spend your daylight hours cooped up in an office – there’s nothing for it but to pack your bags, grab your shades, and escape. Make the bag this fine suede holdall from Ermenegildo Zegna, and the shades these Taos ones from Hopper, named after Mr Dennis Hopper’s retreat in New Mexico. There’s an idea for a holiday.
