Outdoor Gear That Goes The Extra Mile

Three items for the autumn/winter season.

Dress codes are certainly not extinct, but the idea that situations demand a certain set of clothing or a uniform is becoming ever more warped and blurred. Of course, there are certain jobs that require suits. Some restaurants frown upon guests who do not have a jacket and tie about their torso. And you can guarantee that shorts and a Hawaiian shirt would be unwelcome at most funerals. But we live in a modern world influenced by irony just as much as pragmatism – and this is a world where a man can wear slides and socks to a party, dress like a teenager from the 1990s to a job interview, or wear clothing made for the great outdoors on the street or to your mother-in-law’s house. Some of the new items on site today invite us to discuss this latter blend of fashion and function. And discuss it we shall.

The fact that we have once again collaborated with Kingsman to produce an exclusive collection does not only mean we have a whole host of new formalwear to coo over. It also means we have items such as this – which could be described as a little more rugged. But just how rugged exactly depends entirely on how you wear it. Designed with Rocky Mountain Featherbed – masters of outdoor essentials – you could use this to keep you warm on a mountain trek, and slip a suitable jacket on over the top to keep the wind off (look no further than Canada Goose). Alternatively, if the idea of hiking makes you sweat before you’ve even got your boots on, wear it on terra firma beneath a relaxed field jacket like this by J.Crew.

The sight of beanies and bobble hats on catwalks and in street style is nothing new. And we’re not necessarily talking about in the context of a wintery outfit. You don’t need a fleece, gloves or a pair of ski boots to wear a big woolly hat. You can, for example, pair a smart-ish beanie with a suit. Or you could cheer up a more casual outfit by donning a hat with a little more personality. Like this new bobble hat by Moncler. If you decide to do this, keep things plain and a little sleeker in the rest of your outfit to balance things out. If we’re talking footwear, for example, white Converse should do the trick. If you’re using this hat for the purposes it was intended – in inclement weather – you’ll obviously need something a little different. And waterproof.

Time was when walking boots were for, well, walking. But not just any type of walking. Walking which required a little more exertion than plodding 230 steps to the shops and back. Walking which took you a little more vertical than the step up to the entrance of a bar. Less walking, more hiking, or trekking. Anyway, given that we’ve established there are few rules anymore when it comes to style or protocol – feel free to implement outdoorsy boots like this into your casual city wear. Simple blue jeans would work, for example. If you’re more function than fashion – the alternative might be to wear something a little looser and more practical. See below.
