THE JOURNAL

Dressing well for golf should be easy. Spending a few hours on the fairways does not demand as strict a uniform as most sports, and yet the golf course remains one of the sporting world’s most tough to traverse sartorial minefields.
Which is why, if you don’t already, you should probably know about Bogner. Founded back in the 1930s by Mr Willy Bogner Sr and his wife Ms Maria Bogner (and today run by their son Mr Willy Bogner Jr), the family have built a remarkable reputation for their eponymous sports and skiwear brand. It’s not easy to maintain a business, let alone a good reputation, for nearly a century, but that’s because whether it’s on the snowy slopes or the verdant acres of your local golf course, Bogner doesn’t compromise on comfort, style, or technical prowess.
And for golf, Bogner is a welcome beacon in an arena that often leaves much to be desired, aesthetically speaking. Clothing that allows you to swing freely, while still managing to look cool and collected is the order of the day here – from the sharp yet subdued golfing shirts to the functional, snappy trousers and jackets that are made with UV protection technology for long days spent swinging under the sun, there’s a wealth of cleverly made golf clothing here that should be front and centre of every player’s wardrobe, professional or otherwise. How to wear it? That’s the easy part, but on the course as well as in your outfit, remember that details are everything. Here are some particular highlights from Bogner’s summer 2020 golf collection, available on MR PORTER now.
01. Thoroughly modern classics

To give your golf garb an update, try switching up your polo shirt for a regular tee or long-sleeved zip-up once in a while. Bogner’s “Pedro” T-shirt has a mock neck, which looks incredibly modern (and has an elasticated neckline so that it will remain looking sharp and won’t stretch out), while the “Florin” long-sleeved zip-up is a clever choice for colder days on the course, as a base layer or alone. It’s emblazoned with the recognisable Bogner “B” and has the brand’s name printed down the arm, too, so everybody knows your golf gear’s the best.
02. Stylish staples to beat the elements

Bogner’s bread and butter is in making sporting appropriate clothing that looks just as good as it feels to wear. The brand’s “Nico” trousers are a perfect example of this approach; they’re made from expertly engineered stretch-shell, which as well as cutting a slim and flattering profile, also wears particularly well against the elements. The striped pattern of the “Aires” polo shirt – crafted from an eminently breathable cotton and linen, great for summer – will go particularly well with the plain beige of the trousers; the balance between the two means that, whether it’s a birdie or a bogey, you’ll look every part the professional player, no matter the result.
03. Superior performance wear

Golf originated in Scotland in the 15th Century, and though various iterations of golfing uniform has been worn since then, perhaps nothing is as iconic as the golfing shirt. For Bogner, what sets a golf shirt apart is all in the collar; both smart and comfortable, it strikes the right note between wide and narrow, and will stand out for its erudite cut rather than for any loud colours. The brand’s “Ilas” navy golf shirt, for instance, has a dignified accent of pink in the zip and is crafted from smooth sweat-wicking jersey. Wear it under a golfing jacket when the weather’s colder; the “Tayfon-T” model is nylon twill for ultimate insulation that’s still super lightweight and is stylish enough that you could happily wear it off the course, too.
