THE JOURNAL

Whether you’re after a fresh finish or a more worn-in look, we’ve got the jacket for you.
As Mr William Shakespeare put forward in As You Like It, there are seven ages of man, and none of them sound much fun. The earliest is all about “mewling” and “puking”, while during the middle bit, this hypothetical man seems preoccupied with the girth of his beard (no less a conundrum in 2017). By the end, he’s lost everything that he once took for granted – his voice, his teeth, his eyes (Mr Shakespeare doesn’t make it explicit, but presumably the stupid beard, too): depressing. We have much to learn then from the humble denim jacket, a hardy piece of workwear that holds its own, whether still with the tags or in its thrift-store dotage. Here are three such pieces, all new, but all made to represent different stages of in the life cycle of this classic piece – plus how best to wear them.

FACTORY FRESH
Estrenar is a Spanish word that has no literal English translation. Google will tell you it means “release” or “launch”, neither of which covers it. It actually describes the debut of a brand-new article of clothing, and just because the confines of our newspeak provide us no means of expressing this, doesn’t mean that it is not a sensation that we feel. In a bold, dark indigo hue, this jacket by New York’s Rag & Bone is one you should sport when you want a friend or colleague to exclaim: “Is that new?” Constructed from selvedge denim, it is also built to last. Play up the workwear credentials with a button-down checked shirt, such as this example by Moncler Gamme Bleu.
CHARMINGLY WORN-IN
There is comfort to be taken in a piece of apparel that has seen the world and lived to tell the tale. This jacket by Ami looks like it’s been in enough scrapes to one-up the crew of the Orca in Mr Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. As such, it will seamlessly slip into your wardrobe – as if it has always been there – but without the years of wear it takes to get a seasoned appearance. Again, to emphasise this garment’s labouring-class roots, wear it with a pocket tee – grey sits well with this pre-loved blue.
SOMEWHAT OBLITERATED
Sitting somewhere between sun bleached and fully atomised, this jacket by A.P.C. looks like it has seen more washes than your local launderette. And once you get past the initial relief that it doesn’t disintegrate at the single touch of a human hand (it is actually very well made), you will no doubt find it to be a pleasing addition to your wardrobe. It makes a statement without being a statement piece of clothing, and it is a far safer way of attaining a breezy, Californian beach vibe than exposing your own skin to solar radiation. Wear it with a pair of cords in an earthy tone to ground it but roll with its relaxed outlook.
