THE JOURNAL

Our guide to trans-seasonal dressing.
We’re in that awkward part of the year between summer and autumn where choosing what to put on of a morning can be difficult. It can be hard to know what to wear at the best of times, so throwing schizophrenic weather into the mix only complicates things. It’s nearly September, so our brains think brown leaves, chilly weather, right? It’s grey outside, but, inexplicably, it’s still rather warm. But it might not be later. The wind might pick up. It’s enough to make a man give up entirely and stay at home in his sweatpants. Worry not, though. Below, we have come up with three versatile looks that work for this tricky time in our sartorial lives. You’re welcome.
01. A lesson in cotton

The perfect jacket for slightly warmer weather would be cotton. It would be a little on the shorter side, resting, perhaps, just above the hips. It’d be buttoned, not zipped, for extra ventilation and… You get the point. This is the perfect jacket for such a point in the year. And these are some coolly complementary pieces to go with it: a simple white T-shirt and some breezy cotton chinos. You’re set, whatever the weather (within reason).
02. A cardigan as outerwear

When the weather is refusing to choose a lane, you have to become a bit more creative. So cardigans can become outerwear, whereas coats are to be left at home. That is what we are proposing here, with this ribbed wool zip-up piece from Arpenteur, a relatively new-to-us French brand. Obviously, we’re betting against rain and assuming it won’t be too hot (you can always sling it over your shoulder), but this should keep you going from day to (the inevitably cooler) night. Pair it with some simple black jeans and sneakers that match the cardigan for something that’s cool in the other sense of the word.
03. The long-sleeve T-shirt

In London, it’s not quite chilly enough yet to consider wearing anything approaching outerwear. Indeed, after working in this office for an hour, just the notion of wearing something on top of a T-shirt is bringing us out in a sweat. Wear a cotton jersey, such as this grey one. It’s like a T-shirt, but with longer sleeves. Magic. And try smartening it up with a pair of brogues. It might not feel like the weather for them – brogues were invented for tramping through bogs in Scotland, after all – and none of us can move for sneakers at the moment, but if you wear them with invisible socks, you’ll feel the breeze. And it’ll allow you to break them in before inclement weather demands you wear them for more practical reasons.
