THE JOURNAL

For those of us who take a particular interest in the clothes we wear, autumn is the kindest season. The pleasure of swathing oneself in a knee-length coat is a pleasure that doesn’t get old, and this season – from belted coats in contemporary oversized shapes to dignified and staid classics and patterns – here are three of our favourites and some natty suggestions on how to wear them.
An American Classic
Get to know Mr Sid Mashburn. The “true southern gentleman” (as we dubbed him in our recent interview in the Journal) is a stalwart of American men’s style, and we are very pleased to welcome his wares to MR PORTER this month. This traveler’s nylon trench coat is wonderfully practical and can be folded into the matching pouch when you’re on the go. It’s versatile enough that you can wear it with just about anything, smart or casual, but why not channel some southern American charm by wearing it with a pair of beige jeans or chinos.
A Belted Wonder
This Acne Studios coat is straight out of the 1980s. The generously proportioned shape, belt and gingham print give it the impression of something you might have come across in a Soho thrift shop, but of course it’s much nicer than that. The wool is soft and the capacious fit is surprisingly cosy. A coat like this will work particularly well with modern tailoring and contemporary footwear – think chunky sneakers, for instance, or a cleanly cut pair of drawstring trousers.
A Double Ensemble
If you’re a fan of Mr Alessandro Michele’s direction at Gucci, you’ll be a fan of this coat. Did we mention it’s reversible? With the choice between a classic houndstooth wool and a more adventurous logo jacquard print, it’s just the thing if you like to frequently switch up your outerwear. As such, what you wear with it depends on which way you’re wearing it, but practically anything else from the Italian fashion house is a good call, and the brand’s sneakers are fair game. Still, there’s something about the classic colours of the coat that will scrub up particularly well with a spanking pair of Oxfords – these Prestige Becketts from John Lobb are just the ticket.
