Messrs Viggo Mortensen, Jessie Eisenberg, Mark Ryland, Xavier Dolan and Iggy Pop – the best-dressed (or undressed) men at this year’s Cannes Film Festival .
Red carpets, champagne, impeccably styled celebrities and lots of VIP areas where almost no-one is allowed to go: yes, the Cannes Film Festival 2016 is almost upon us, a fact hammered home by the announcement of this year’s line-up this morning. As ever, at this year’s edition of the glittering schmooze-fest there’s plenty going on, but a few key items have really captured MR PORTER’s attention. Scroll down to clue yourself up on the crucial things that will be unfolding on the Croisette this May.

Director Mr Matt Ross’s oddball drama Captain Fantastic, which is in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes, was described by Variety as “among the most polished and relatable of this year’s Sundance offerings”. Telling the story of a progressive dad (Mr Mortensen) who raises his children in isolation from the modern world, it looks full of satirical fun at the expense of mainstream culture. But more importantly, the outfits (created by Mr Quentin Tarantino’s costume designer Ms Courtney Hoffman) look rather wonderful too, with the family’s separation from contemporary life signaled by their radical, peaced-out 1970s wardrobe.
Mr Mark Rylance as the BFG

After Mr Mark Rylance won the Best Supporting Actor trophy at this year’s Baftas, the world was made aware of what a particularly winning and infectious smile the British actor is capable of. And now he’s going to be playing one of the most beloved children’s characters of all time – Mr Roald Dahl’s BFG. (Big Friendly Giant) in a film directed by Mr Stephen Spielberg, a master of the cinematic warm-and-fuzzy feeling. Call us sentimental, but this sounds rather good. Also, how will Mr Rylance suit the character’s supersized ears? He may have to invest in a bigger hat.
Mr Iggy Pop might come

People tend to dress up rather smartly for Cannes – if it’s not a tuxedo on the red carpet of a much-buzzed premiere, it’s a Mr Cary Grant-worthy combination of white chinos and double breasted blazer for strutting up and down the Croisette. Now, what will happen if we add into this equation a eye-rolling punk god who seldom wears so much as sun block on his wiry shoulders and has a propensity for exposing himself in public? Perhaps we will find out this year. Mr Jim Jarmusch, the cult director behind such excellent, understated films as Stranger Than Paradise, Ghost Dog and Dead Man, is screening his The Stooges documentary Gimme Danger out of competition at the festival. Which means that Mr Iggy Pop might come and show some skin.
Mr Jesse Eisenberg taking on Mr Woody Allen

The opening film of Cannes is Mr Woody Allen’s latest, Café Society, starring Mr Jesse Eisenberg and Ms Kristen Stewart. Not only are we intrigued to see Mr Jesse Eisenberg – the contemporary master of the awkward-thoughtful-introverted character type – bumble and stumble his way through (what we only assume will be) an inimitably winsome and neurotic script from Mr Allen, we’re also somewhat enamoured with the costumes – from the production stills it seems impeccable summery tailoring features heavily.
Mr Xavier Dolan’s Return

Infuriatingly successful Canadian wunderkind Mr Xavier Dolan has a longstanding history of success at Cannes. His first film J’ai Tué Ma Mere (I Killed My Mother) showed at the festival’s director’s fortnight in 2009 (when he was only 21) and won three awards. This year he’s back, with two of France’s most famous actresses, Ms Marion Cotillard and Ms Léa Seydoux, in tow, with chirpily titled film Juste La Fin Du Monde (It’s Only the End of the World) screening in competition. Mr Dolan is a regular at the international menswear shows, and counts people such as Louis Vuitton’s Mr Kim Jones as admirers, so while the film looks good, we’re also keen to see what he’ll be wearing on the red carpet (he’s pulled off a few statement patterns in his time).
