Sail away with Bremont’s America’s Cup timepiece collection.
It’s not uncommon for contemporary watch companies to attach themselves to various feats of derring-do via sponsorship. But when it comes to British watch brand Bremont’s patronage of superlatively awe-inspiring sailing race the America’s Cup, there are a few trump cards in play that make the whole thing feel that little bit more special. For one thing, Bremont’s co-founders, Messrs Nick and Giles English, used to not only hop on board but live on their father’s sailing boat when they were children. Then there’s the fact that Mr Giles English, before he co-founded Bremont with his brother in 2002, trained as a naval architect.
It’s hard to imagine a pair, in fact, who can so thoroughly empathise with (and therefore assist) the men who will be whipping their way across the seas between now and the America’s Cup final in June 2017, in the hope of bringing back the trophy (known as “the Auld Mug”) back to their home countries. Which is why it makes so much sense that the brand is not only the first British official time sponsor of the America’s cup since it originated in 1851 (yes, you read that date right), but the time sponsor of the current cup holders, Oracle Team USA.
To commemorate the partnership, Bremont has done what it does best, and launched a special collection of watches inspired by some of the miraculous feats of engineering that have debuted at the America’s Cup in its history of more than a century. Below, to coincide with the next America’s Cup race, which takes place in the Hudson River this weekend, we run you through the three models in the series that we are happy to be stocking on MR PORTER.
The AC I

The design of this smart watch is inspired in part by the majestic J-Class yachts that competed in the America’s Cup in the 1930s. A polished steel update of Bremont’s SOLO range, it comes with a top execution automatic movement and antishock mount, the mechanics for both of which can be viewed through the transparent case back. As a nod to the competition, the form of the “Auld Mug” can be seen lightly repeated across the white opaline dial.
The Oracle I

Where the AC I is a classic design that would look as good with a suit as with your weekend get-up, the Oracle I, created in partnership with Oracle Team USA is a watch that’s very much designed with sailing functionality in mind. A step on from Bremont’s Supermarine range – a model that’s used day-to-day by divers and in the military – it nods to the team colours with its red rubber strap and red-tipped minute hand, but also provides extra functionality via a technical 500m water resistant case, shock-resistant movement mount and antimagnetic Faraday cage, which protects the BE-36AE movement.
The Oracle II

The Oracle II comes with all the considerable (diving) bells and whistles of the Oracle I, with the added extra of a second time zone (presumably so, while you’re sailing away in Bermuda, you’re aware that it’s tea time back home).
