THE JOURNAL

Allow us to introduce a sports-inspired range of clothing far too stylish to wear to the gym.
Over the past few years, the realm of menswear has taken a decidedly athletic turn. As we evolve to keep up with the mobile demands of the digital generation – blurring the lines between work and play, “disrupting” conventions as we go – so too does our approach to dressing. And if you haven’t already noticed, we are now firmly in an era of “athleisure”. It is now acceptable (nay, recommended) to wear sports-inspired garments outside of the gym, and you can even throw on some sneakers with your suit (on some occasions).
Leading the way in this sport-luxe movement is Solid Homme – a South Korean label that combines an athletic aesthetic with elements of classic tailoring to create smart-casual pieces with a streetwear feel. Helmed by Ms Woo Youngmi – the force behind the eponymous Paris-based brand – Solid Homme launched some 14 years ago in Seoul, but has only recently gone global. Solid Homme’s minimal and understated collections were designed to answer “the call of the modern urbanite”. And that is exactly what they do. Graphic shirts, scuba sweaters and exemplary outerwear are just a few of the things we have snapped up for MR PORTER, but there are many more ways to wear this brand. Scroll down for our favourite pieces and how to style them.
The suede jacket
Originally the uniform of fighter pilots, the bomber jacket has become a staple in the modern man’s wardrobe, evoking as it does a sense of adventure and effortless cool. This particular piece, in a butter-soft tan suede with sporty contrast navy panels, will serve you well wherever you may be this season – the sleek cut and simple design mean it will look suitably smart for brunch in town, and the deep pockets and twill lining mean it is practical for venturing out of doors, too. Pair with this similarly sporty wool-blend T-shirt, in a complementary rich autumnal red.
The intarsia sweater
Now the word “intarsia” is one of those style terms that might not mean much to you. In fact, it caused some division at MR PORTER HQ recently, as the office was (shockingly?) split into those in the know, and a rather defensive bunch of the uninformed. For all of our sakes, we will now explain. It essentially describes an inlaid decorative design, where wool, or whatever material is being used, is woven with different coloured strands to create distinctive blocks that fit within the piece is as a whole. Solid Homme is a master of such techniques, and this striking graphic sweater will add an artful touch to your weekend wardrobe. For extreme comfort, continue the streetwear feel with these tailored sweatpants in a soft, dappled charcoal wool blend.
The winter coat
An overcoat is arguably the most essential piece of outerwear there is. Appropriate for shielding your suit from the elements between business meetings, it can also prove incredibly useful for smartening up a slouchier off-duty style. Solid Homme’s version, above, is unsurprisingly as sleek and minimal as they come, with hidden fastenings and a slightly relaxed fit. The cashmere wool blend and smooth satin lining will ensure maximum comfort when on the move, and the deep navy tone mean you can throw it on over pretty much anything. But that doesn’t mean you should. We recommend wearing it over this cosy melange ribbed-knit jumper – the slimmer cut and crew neck make it perfect for layering.
