How to get a table at New York’s most stylish French restaurant.
When it comes to finding a good restaurant and knowing what to expect, it’s always better to get a proper insider opinion. So, as part of our series exploring some of the world’s finest restaurants through the eyes of a regular, Mr Trey Laird, founder of creative agency Laid + Parters and MR PORTER Style Council Member, shares his insight on one of his favourite restaurants in New York, Le Coucou. Combining classical French opulence with New York’s metropolitan sensibility, the restaurant is one of the city’s most stylish establishments – hence why it’s usually fully booked. See below for some tips on what to order, when to book, and what to drink.

Why do you love Le Coucou?
The food, the atmosphere, the service. It’s just always a genuine experience. I first went two years ago for my anniversary. I love the mix of Downtown ease with a new take on elegance.
Do you have a favourite spot to sit in?
I like the tables towards the windows with a view in towards the open kitchen. I like the fact that it’s a block from Canal Street, yet one of the most elegant dining rooms in the city. Every detail is considered: the tall single-tapered candles burning on each table, the exposed brick contrasted with the moody romantic murals behind the bar, the open-kitchen atmosphere combined with the sophistication level of the food. The small bar on the right when you enter is also really special.
What’s the best dish?
I love the sole with the lemony sauce and the peeled grapes. Everything is extremely simple on one hand, yet also quite complex and layered. It’s unique in its blend of those two attitudes.
What do you always order to drink?
When do you usually go?
I always book for an evening table with my wife, Jenny.
How do I ensure I get a reservation/walk in when there’s no queue?
I don’t really think of it as a walk-in kind of place. I plan in advance. Give them a call about a month before you want your table and you should have no problems.
