100 Days Till Rio? Try These

Words by Mr Tom M Ford

27 April 2016

If you hadn’t noticed, it’s only 100 days until the Rio Olympics. We say only 100 days – that’s actually quite a long time. But not when you consider this momentous sporting occasion comes around but once every four years. And, anyway, #rio100 makes for a rather snappy social media hashtag. So we’re definitely allowed to shout about it. Now, we imagine not many of you will be competing in the Olympics. It’s more likely you will be competing to see how many caipirinhas you can down while watching the beach volleyball. But that doesn’t mean the upcoming sporting activity won’t inspire you to get in shape in the meantime. Even if it’s just to ensure you look good lying on the Copacabana. Check out our sports edit, below, which caters for all needs.

Running

NIKE RUNNING.  Air Zoom Structure 19 Sneakers.

Running is the easiest way to get fit, whether you’re getting trim for a holiday or preparing for a competitive race. You may not be pitting yourself against Mr Usain Bolt in the 100m, but that 5k around the local park is still tough going, right? So you need the right gear. These new Nike Running sneakers – replete with Flymesh uppers and a “triple-density foam system” – represent some of the best performance shoes available. To avoid looking like a sponsored athlete (all the gear, no idea and all that), go with something more classic and traditional on your torso, such as this by Iffley Road.

Cycling

CASTELLI.  Velocissimo FZ Prosecco Strada Jersey.

There are different tribes of cyclist: from suited commuters on city-hire cycles, to hipsters on fixed-gear bikes, to Lycra lads on carbon-fibre frames. This Castelli shirt is very much geared towards the latter. It wicks away moisture and has excellent ventilation to prevent you getting too hot, it’s highly reflective and it has three back pockets for storage. You could always stash valuables in this saddle bag. There probably won’t be enough room in your shorts.

Beach Volleyball

ACNE STUDIOS.  Perry Short-Length Swim Shorts.

Beach volleyball – wahey, right? Unfortunately, this most aesthetically pleasing (and apparently fun) sport is less than accessible to those of us who live in damp/freezing/unattractive climates such as that of the UK. No matter, though – there are such things as holidays, during which everyone is very much able to dive into a bit of the BV dream. We would suggest doing this while wearing these eye-catching swim shorts from Acne Studios, as well as some shades (they're more for the look, but in beach volleyball, this matters).
