33 Ways To Refresh Your Wardrobe Right Now

Words by The MR PORTER Team

22 February 2022

On the struggle bus since January? Still languishing in WFH sweats? Haven’t quite shaken off the old routine? Early spring is a good time to hit reset. While a wardrobe overhaul won’t solve everything, by pressing the button marked “refresh” on your style this season, you should find new purpose or at the very least the ideal layering options now the weather has entered changeable. Below, we’ve selected 33 items that offer some changes for the good. It’s a start, eh?

01.

Switch up your style on the spot

What’s better than a new jacket for spring? A two-in-one jacket. This reversible quilted cotton number by Isabel Marant, which has a fun geometric pattern on one side and a mustard-yellow on the other, will bring versatility and colour to any look this season.

02.

Go green with your high-tops

Reimagined from the 1970s version of the Chuck Taylor design, the Chuck 70 gives your feet a vintage dash. The iconic sneakers are now being made with recycled canvas instead of using raw materials. This navy iteration will go with anything.

03.

Go big on your denim

Take a leaf out of Gen Z’s book and opt for an oversized, fisherman-style cut for your jeans. These patchwork ones by LOEWE, inspired by carpenter workwear, are the perfect mix of comfort and style and will give any ensemble a utility flair.

04.

Elevate your bomber jacket

For an upgraded take on the classic bomber, look no further than CELINE HOMME. Building on the classic cut and the striped varsity lapel, creative director Mr Hedi Slimane has taken it a step further with this silver sequined jacket inspired by youth cultures and the neorave scene.

05.

Shape up with new sunglasses

Cutler and Gross, which was founded 53 years ago in Knightsbridge, London, has earned cult status for its stylish and high-quality glasses. Hand crafted in Italy, these rectangular frames were modelled on a pair of sunglasses found at a London army surplus shop in the 1970s.

06.

Upgrade your sandals

You probably have a pair of sandals already. You might even have a couple of pairs, but are they quilted-leather sandals made in Italy and designed by the Antwerp menswear legend Mr Dries van Noten? No? Well, then. We rest our case.

07.

Add some spring to your step with sneakers

Balenciaga’s sneaker hot streak continues with the X-Pander, a sort of high-heeled running shoe that’s a) easier to wear and b) a lot better looking than that description makes it sound, especially in this pre-faded army-green colourway.

08.

Make your mind up about slides

And so to the eternal question: slides or flip-flops? With Rick Owens’ hybrid Granola sandals, which feature the wraparound uppers of a slide with the thonged toe of a flip-flop, you can have both. And all rendered in a beautifully soft black leather.

09.

Add a dash of art school to your shoes

Dr. Martens’ Chelsea boots have become a punkish classic over the years. The shoe’s “art-school cool kid” vibes are further accentuated in this special-edition collaboration with Japanese streetwear brand Neighborhood, which is finished with flecks of white paint.

10.

Jazz up your holiday wardrobe

The season of jazzy short-sleeved shirts fast approaches. Don’t get caught out. Ensure you’re well-prepared with this shirt from Mr P., which is spray-dyed for a psychedelic, cloud-like finish. Wear it unbuttoned over a white T-shirt for an instant holiday look.

11.

Cash in your old checks

A new season seems like a good opportunity to update your smart-casual repertoire, in particular the ever so versatile checked shirt. A new one can’t hurt, right? Wear it solo or throw it over a plain T-shirt.

12.

Say it with knitwear

Florals for spring? Not exactly groundbreaking, but Nanushka’s daisies and retro-inspired swirls might be the exceptions that prove the rule. One thing’s for sure, in uncertain conditions, mixed-yarn cardigans make for the perfect mid-layer. If you’re not one for graphic knits, we have plenty of other options.

13.

Soften your palette

We do not advise you to let go of your knitwear just yet, so why not try new colours? Out with the dark layers and earthy tones; in with the pastels and brighter shades. One of the very few reasons we’d justify wearing cashmere in spring.

14.

Take the lazy option with colour

Earlier this month, we reported that fashion is back and – good news – it’s more colourful than ever. If you struggle to brighten up your wardrobe, loungewear is the best place to start. Opt for Acne Studios’ green or go even bolder with these sweatpants by Bottega Veneta.

15.

Bring joy to your beachwear

As the weather warms up, days get longer and summer gets closer, life generally becomes more enjoyable and our clothes usually follow suit. SMR Days’ designs are guaranteed to bring joy (the brand says its clothes are “made to transcend the usual beachside attire”), but Wales Bonner’s west African-inspired motifs will do that, too.

16.

Rip up the denim rulebook

You may wonder why we’ve chosen distressed and ripped jeans as our “elevated” jeans. They’re not the obvious choice, but when faced with the task of shaking things up, it may become clear that your black jeans and your standard blue jeans are simply not cutting it any more. They’re easy, yes, but they’re not interesting or different. This light-wash pair from John Elliott is both interesting and different and will most definitely elevate your outfit.

17.

Have some fun with a classic

The Missoni knit is a classic for a reason. It’s groovy and elegant somehow all at the same time. This T-shirt isn’t a knit, but it’s dyed to look like it and we think it’s a rather fun substitute for the grubby old tees you have been pulling on over the winter. We’re all looking for a little fun in our lives during the grey month of February. Here’s how you inject some colour and excitement with Italianate ease.

18.

Sport a fresh T-shirt

Raglan T-shirts seem extremely American, do they not? The contrast-colour sleeves and diagonal seams simply scream baseball in the 1950s. So you may be surprised to learn that the style originated in England after Lord Raglan lost an arm in the Battle of Waterloo and adopted coats with this kind of sleeve. Anyway, this adidas X Wales Bonner tee is more reminiscent of baseball and is therefore sporty and casual and perfect with jeans or workwear-inspired trousers.

19.

Make your next hoodie a knit

If you’re going to wear a sweatshirt everywhere (and you are, be honest), it might as well be a cool one. While you’re at it, make it a knit. This way you get all the comfort and casual appeal of a sweatshirt while adding a layer of smartness. A knit looks intentional and can’t be confused for something you picked up in a mall when you were in high school. Paired with some dark jeans or trousers, you could even wear this on a date. Go on, it’ll be a talking point.

20.

Go to town on blazers

Ready to get out there and look incredible? This Needles blazer is just want you need to kick off wedding season with a bang. It’s white – have you noticed? – which means it’s not black or navy, which means it’s going to be different from what every other shmo out there is wearing. It will attract attention, so it’s not for the meek, but we think you won’t regret dressing boldly. This kind of thing always pays off.

21.

Pump up the volume of your bag

Logic dictates that as the weather warms, you discard your layers. While your puffer goes on hiatus for a few months, Maison Margiela’s bag will keep you in tune with the current penchant for quilting without bringing on a sweat.

22.

Brighten your fiscal prospects

Is there anything that heralds the coming of spring more than a sunny shade of yellow? It’s bold and bright, but, better still, this wallet is made with Bottega Veneta’s flawless nous in leather craft, which makes it a worthy home for your hard-earned capital.

23.

Get outdoors again – with the right kit

Now the world is slowly coming to rights, it’s time to go roaming once again. You will be ready for anything on your wanderings with this smart backpack, the result of a creative amalgam between Paul Smith and cult Japanese label Porter-Yoshida & Co.

24.

Raise your cap game

The name Casablanca evokes images of swaying, sun-dappled palms, or perhaps just a rather sullen-looking Mr Humphrey Bogart. This cap, from the brand titled after the Moroccan metropolis, is just the sort of zesty headgear you want when the sun makes an appearance.

25.

Get casual with your outerwear

Despite Drake’s being headquartered in Mayfair, London, it borrows its tailoring techniques from the Italians, who know a thing or two about cutting a more relaxed profile. Lightweight and versatile, wearing this denim workwear jacket will feel anything but a chore.

26.

Slip on some natty loafers

Everyone knows boots are for winter and sandals are for summer, so it stands to reason that spring is the time for loafing about. This pair of loafers from Yuketen blends a natty mix of suede and leather, which makes them stand out from your standard black penny loafers.

27.

Add some rock’n’roll to your outfit

As brand names go, Jam Homemade certainly sits on the, er, quirkier end of the spectrum. But while its oddly wholesome moniker conjures up images of domestic bliss, the Japanese label’s skeleton-adorned silver and onyx necklace (and all its other covetable pieces) evokes a more rebellious, rock’n’roll realm.

28.

Try a tasselled tie-dyed scarf

As if the prospect of styling a summer scarf weren’t terrifying enough, this cotton-voile piece from Nicholas Daley comes in a tie-dye print and is polished off with tassels for good measure. But take a closer look and you’ll discover there’s little to be frightened of. Rather, the rich yet low-key colour palette presents an invitingly wearable way to spice up a safe outfit of neutrals.

29.

Invest in a corduroy overshirt

WTAPS’ wares may typically fall under the umbrella of contemporary streetwear, but founder Mr Tetsu Nishiyama can whip up a mean old-timey staple, too. The proof is in this oversized logo-appliquéd overshirt, which arrives in a hardy cotton-corduroy and carries a high chance of pairing seamlessly with pretty much everything you already own.

30.

Refresh your fragrance

In the MR PORTER purview, one’s wardrobe comprises not only clothes and shoes but extends to fragrance, and there’s no more apt time for an olfactory upgrade than the turn of the season. To usher in spring, we’ll be spritzing this limited-edition scent from scholarly Swedish perfumer 19-69, which marries notes of cactus, vetiver and bergamot for a crisp, fresh result.

31.

Slip into white tailored trousers

While the right pair of white trousers can quite easily offer year-round mileage (if styled shrewdly), it’s in the spring-summer months that they truly come into their own. Of the myriad styles making their way onto our shelves this season, our current pick is this straight-leg pair from Ermenegildo Zegna, which you’re bound to fall back on for aeons to come.

32.

Trade in your Achilles for BBalls

Common Projects’ Italian-made, deliciously supple leather Achilles sneaker belongs to the pantheon of sneaker classics – up there with the Air Force 1, the Chuck Taylor and the Stan Smith. But while you’re rounding out your collection with yet another pair in yet another colour (no judgement, here), be sure not to sleep on its underrated BBall low-tops, which are tricked out with mesh panels for a laid-back, sportier slant.

33.

Take a chance on the polo shirt

You might be surprised to see a polo shirt on our wardrobe-upgrade list when it can usually be found in secondary-school gyms or at the golf course. However, in the skilled hands of Brioni, the humble, oft-overlooked PE top has been transformed into something novel entirely: a tasteful, luxurious spring-summer staple spun from a blend of linen, cotton and cashmere.
