Dress Code: Five Lightweight Jackets For Summer Nights
It’s that time of year when, even if it’s still hot during the day, you need an extra layer in the evening. There are few things worse than being caught unprepared when the sun sets and your blood turns to ice. We’ve found a few of the best lightweight jackets (well, four jackets and one vest) to buy now and wear when darkness falls.
The beachside shell
It’s important in the last few weeks of summer to eat as many of your dinners alfresco as possible. If you can do this next on a beach, so much the better. Even in the warmest climates, evenings spent next to breaking waves and salty breezes can raise the hairs on your arms, so bring a little nylon jacket, such as this one from C.P. Company, to block the wind and keep you warm through to the dessert.
The day-to-night party jacket
Your friends are having a few people over for a spot of day drinking in the garden and perhaps a hot dog or two. Chances are it will last into the evening, so you would be wise to have a Carhartt WIP (or similar) chore jacket to hand. This type of outerwear pairs seamlessly with daytime attire such as baggy shorts and Birkenstocks.
The outdoor date-night layer
You’ve snagged an outside table at a hot restaurant for your hot date. Well done, you. Don’t go ruining the vibe with blue lips once night falls. Keep warm with a light blue slim-fit suede jacket. This classic iteration from TOM FORD will do nicely. It looks stunning over a printed shirt and a pair of elegant, generously cut trousers. If your date is feeling the cold, you’ll earn some Brownie points if you lend them your jacket. Just make sure you get it back at the end of the evening.
The campfire classic
What better way to see out the dog days of summer than with a spot of camping with friends? Once you’ve pitched your tent and broken out the s’mores, you’ll need a few layers to keep yourself toasty. This Brunello Cucinelli gilet isn’t exactly what we’d call a performance piece, but it certainly looks the part, especially if you decide to give up and head to the nearest Soho House.
