THE JOURNAL

“Every collection at Dunhill is built around the long arc of our history,” says creative director Simon Holloway. “We start with the origin, which was really the invention of the car, and Alfred Dunhill’s emporium that was built around that lifestyle.”
Drawing on that inimitable archive, along with the wardrobe of the Duke of Windsor (the man knew how to dress), Holloway and his team have crafted a collection, and accompanying World of Gifting, that runs the gamut from Italian cashmere scarves to leather-covered luxury game sets. “There’s a focus on beautiful objects and craftsmanship, coming from a viewpoint of this devotion to anything artisanal, through a lens of timeless menswear.”
Below, Holloway has picked out seven of his favourite Dunhill gifts for the upcoming festive season.
01. The leather driving jacket

“This leather jacket is directly inspired by a piece in our archive from approximately 120 years ago,” Holloway says. “The signifying details are the band collar, the button front, the patch pockets, and a soft tailored shape.
“We use a very high grade of French lambskin, which is tanned in a way that makes it almost look like it has a patina to it. So, the colouration is very deep and rich. There’s only one tannery in the world that makes this type of leather, in France.
“The original Dunhill outerwear and leather pieces were often lined in camel hair or tweed. This version is lined in a fine undyed wool, which is the natural colour of the fleece of the sheep. In fact, we can no longer source that wool; it doesn’t exist – it’s a real archive piece.”
02. The Turbo lighter

“The Turbo lighter is specifically for the connoisseur of cigars, because it’s like a little jet flame lighter, which always impresses when it’s lit.
“It’s exquisitely rendered in a beautiful gold metal, and the reed pattern on the lighter is inspired by a classic engine that has been part of the iconography of Dunhill for over a century of producing lighters. Then the functionality of it is top-notch. That click is very satisfying.”
03. The oak topple blocks

“While this is a game, I also see it as a table sculpture as much as anything. It’s hard to pick, but this might be my favourite item from our gifting selection. The blocks are made from English oak, so they have a nice sense of quality and weight to them, along with the goatskin leather sleeve that ties it all together.
“There’s also a Rollagas lighter hidden in there, which adds an extra element, and just makes it a lovely object to have in your home.”
04. The travel ashtray

“What’s wonderful about this ashtray is that, for somebody who needs it, it’s slim enough to go in a pocket or a piece of luggage, as it doesn’t weigh much. It’s a lovely, practical thing that leans into our craft of leather and metal work. It ties into some of the other games and objects, with the goatskin box and the drawer that slides out.
“Overall, there’s a sleek sense of craftsmanship that looks good either in a room at home or when you’re travelling. It’s all very cohesive.”
05. The Hobnail cufflinks
“As you can see, our cufflinks feature our house hobnail motif, that texture that appears on our lighters. I love an opportunity to wear cufflinks when called for, and these are simple and beautifully made from silver that’s been coated in rhodium for extra durability.”
06. The leather-covered corkscrew

“You could say there’s always a shade of James Bond found somewhere in a Dunhill collection. This is a gadget-like piece, a beautiful leather-wrapped object.
“You unscrew one side and out pops the corkscrew. Even in a small piece like this, you have that sense of stitching, of leather and the mix of the metal. At the end of the day, it’s just a very practical corkscrew, with a little element of stealth and subtlety, which is great.”
07. The cashmere scarf
“Our double-faced scarf is made in Italy from pure cashmere. On one side, it’s plain grey, on the other side, you have this delicate windowpane check that references a tailoring cloth. Which gives it this lovely, quite masculine detailing without it being too loud – it goes particularly well with dark, wintry clothes.”
