THE JOURNAL

We don’t know about you, but one of our wishes (don’t say resolutions) for the year ahead is to get outside more. One full calendar month into 2023 and we are feeling more positive about this than ever. The sun is finally up before 8.00am and a 5.00pm sunset is so close we can almost taste it (the flavour reminds us of a negroni, if you must ask).
To celebrate this, we are planning countryside walks and, where possible, some active mini-breaks to maintain the mood up until spring. The key bit of kit required for these adventures is a pair of sturdy hiking boots to keep us looking and feeling the part. They should offer plenty of ankle support, be made from quality hardwearing materials to endure rough terrain and have a lug sole. For those who don’t know, a lug sole is one made of thick rubber with a deep tread to ensure maximum grip. No slipping on scree with these.
So, why not follow our lead and take a hike this weekend? Or, you know, just look like you could.
01.
The classic Diemme leather boots

Diemme’s deep brown leather pair, with its contrasting red laces and traditional D rings, has a retro feel that would look at home on an Alpine postcard. Once part of the Italian brand’s hunting collection, these hardwearing boots have been updated with a lighter sole, but they will still hold their own on the peaks.

The sleek Manolo Blahnik exclusives

If you prefer your hiking footwear geared towards city living, these Calaurio boots from Manolo Blahnik have a durable sole that will stand up to pounding the pavements between meetings – which is useful, because the sand-coloured suede uppers (offset beautifully against soft brown leather) are perhaps best kept pristine.

The cosy Brunello Cucinelli pair

For all the classic hiking boot features made just a bit more special, try this pair from Italian luxury brand Brunello Cucinelli. The boots are crafted from soft suede in a warm caramel hue and feature padded wool collars to keep your ankles stable and warm. A great choice for some chic après-ski or weekend drinks at a country pub.

The smart Moncler hiking boots

Moncler’s Vancouver boots, made from supple black leather, are a smart alternative to more rustic hiking styles. Non-slip rubber soles mean these will fare well on the mountainside, but their understated design (with just a hint of the tricolour on the heel, nodding to the brand’s heritage) means they could just as easily be dressed up for dinner.

The sporty ROA hiking sneakers

If you prefer a sportswear-influenced look (or you take your mountain activities seriously), these ripstop and leather hiking sneakers are a no-brainer. The Andreas style from ROA features lightweight Vibram Megagrip soles with a toothed tread, padded high-top collars and practical pull tabs to ensure your hike goes without a hitch.
