How Remi Relief Nailed Authentic Vintage

Words by Mr Adam Welch

Mr Yutaka Goto presents a masterclass in vintage dressing.

The sun-soaked clothing produced by Mr Yutaka Goto for his brand Remi Relief offers a great example of what is so appealing about the Japanese approach to product. Mr Goto, like many of his compatriots, is influenced by classic American styles from the 1950s and 1960s, in particular, the Californian surf culture of the period.

But in modernising such classics as the bomber, the trucker jacket, the plaid shirt and the printed tee, he’s not just interested in reissuing forgotten designs, but in creating contemporary pieces with the same beautifully worn-in feel of his vintage inspirations. In pursuit of such authenticity, he’s not only investigated a variety of dyeing and ageing techniques, but set up his own factory in Okayama prefecture to perfect them.

The results of such efforts are evident in his latest, exclusive capsule collection for MR PORTER, comprising a range of artfully faded and washed garments that mix a 1960s aesthetic with a rather grungy, modern approach to fraying and distressing. Scroll down to discover our favourite new pieces from the collection, and how to wear them.

In this deep blue zip-up number, Mr Goto offers a wry take on the souvenir jacket, keeping detailing simple aside from the wonderful embroidered back design (an advert for “Alaska: America’s Last Frontier”. Thanks to its washed-out blue, this will make an excellent weekend option with other denim-y colours. But for a sharp contrast, you could throw it on over this bright pink “Aloha” T-shirt.

You may have read our article earlier this year on the trend for frayed-hem jeans that has emerged on the streets of stylish capitals all across the world. You might have also gleaned from the subtext that – ahem – we didn’t have many examples in stock yet. But now we are proud to announce that another iteration of this coveted item is here, courtesy of Mr Goto. Wear it with one of his faded hoodies, such as this one embellished with a psychedelic “Yosemite” print.

This shirt is what we in the style business would describe as dégradé, meaning  the cotton flannel fabric has been woven and then subjected to a certain amount of abuse, so the colour has been eaten away in a pleasing sunrise effect. But you don’t need to know all that to see that it looks good. Work with its muted colour palette by pairing it with a pair of Remi Relief's frayed drawstring chinos.
