How To Wear Leopard Print Well

Let’s talk about leopard print. The words alone are enough to make many men shudder. For so long, it’s been synonymous with all things bold and brash; amid a wardrobe full of crisp shirts and tasteful tailoring, it’s easy to think that a little leopard might feel out of place.

And yet, when the most gregarious of animal prints turned up in the SS19 collections of our favourite designers, we couldn’t help but be inspired to try something a little unexpected. After all, even the most stylish men need to step out of their sartorial safe-zone every so often – or, at the very least, test the waters.

So how exactly does the well-dressed man venture into big-cat territory? It goes without saying that what you choose to pair leopard with is paramount. Neutral hues and classic cuts should help tone down bold prints, and ensure the overall look is a little less Liberace.

For those brave enough to embrace one of menswear’s trickiest trends, here are three ways to wear it.

Dive head first (or legs, rather) into the leopard trend via these statement shorts by Japanese brand Sacai. The eye-catching print is offset slightly by a relaxed wide-leg fit (“tight” and “leopard” might be a touch too far), although the fuzzy faux-fur fabric makes them as much a novelty to wear as they are to behold. Of course, pulling off such a stand-out garment requires sufficient swagger. Sportswear pieces such as this black Gucci hoodie, and a pair of streamlined black sneakers, will keep things cool, rather than kitsch.

Sir Paul Smith’s PS label offers a decidedly more dialled-down take on leopard print with this chocolate-brown button-up. The designer has a knack for spinning colour and print in a way that’s refined and wearable, and the subtle black-and-blue pattern on this shirt makes leopard a lot less intimidating. It’s crafted from a lightweight cotton that’s ideal for warm weather. Team with Mr P.’s slim-fit white jeans – a summer classic – which will set off the brown beautifully.

If you’re hoping to inject a little whimsy into your wardrobe, but prefer not to wear your spots on your sleeve, then these leopard-print boxers are your best bet. Ever the epicurean, Mr Tom Ford’s underwear line includes a selection of sensual silk pieces trimmed with a black velvet waistband – perfect for the man who dresses purely for his own pleasure. Paired with a black cotton T-shirt by Prada, your lounge game will be elevated to new levels of luxurious.
