What’s not to like about loafers? They’re smart without being too fussy. They’re laid-back but none too shabby. They’re supremely easy to slip on and kick off howsoever you please – provided you keep all flying shoes below knee level, of course – but, most importantly of all, they’ve got personality. Whether you’re a penny loafer type, or are more drawn towards the more exotic varieties – tasselled; fringed; shearling-lined (we can thank Gucci for that particular innovation) – there is plenty of scope for adding flair to your outfit via a pair of these versatile shoes. Loafers are a perfect option for a summer wedding: they combine the smartness and (when worn with no-show socks) airiness that are almost essential for such occasions. Seeing as it’s a formal affair, you should opt for a more classically styled pair, such as this example from Italian footwear specialist Tod’s. They’ll look particularly good with any light-grey suit (see our guide to matching shoes with suits for more info on this topic), but since it’s likely warm for quite a while yet, we’d recommend this Kingsman one in particular. Dressy and stylish with its Prince of Wales check, it’s nonetheless delightfully airy thanks to the wool-linen-silk blend fabric.

Looking to get a little bit more adventurous with your loafers? Look no further than Gucci, currently famed for its backless, slipper-like examples, but also very strong in the loafers-with-heels-intact department, too – this fringed pair being a case in point. For a dressed-up, but not too formal evening outfit, wear them with a white shirt and sharp pair of tailored trousers from Prada. To up the fun factor, choose a track-inspired jacket from Valentino.

No one feels like getting all that dressy on holiday – but should you need to at least make a show of making an effort, loafers are a good choice for this as well. Opt for a slipper-like tasselled pair in suede from British shoemaker Edward Green. Worn with a pair of muted olive shorts from Folk and a camp-collar shirt, they’re perfect for an evening stroll to whatever local restaurant/bar/den of iniquity comes most recommended by the MR PORTER Style Council.
