THE JOURNAL

Shorts have long been a sort of sartorial blind spot for men – a piece of clothing that can throw up more awkward questions than it solves. Do my legs look like plucked chickens? (Probably yes.) Can you wear them to the office? (Probably no.) How short is too short? (We’ll leave that up to you…) However, as the boundaries in our lives become increasingly blurred and we embrace a hybrid way of living, we will inevitably find ourselves in them more often. The work call from the park. The Zoom camera cropped strategically at the waist. And, of course, those long, sunny, summer weekends away. So, it’s time to master them – once and for all. To give you a helping hand, we’ve selected five fresh pairs for 2022 and some stylish ways to wear them.
01.
The Brunello Cucinelli luxury cargo shorts

Where once we might have baulked at investing even a mildly significant amount in shorts, relying on a fraying near see-through nylon pair for our annual holiday to Greece, things are a little different in 2022. Our responsibilities in this important field are greater. This spring we’re asking why shouldn’t shorts have the same weight as trousers and going full Italian luxury.

The TOM FORD floral number

On a similar theme, if you think you won’t get enough wear out of a pair of TOM FORD floral cotton-blend shorts, think again. Even if you have a British climate to contend with, summer is on the way. And we’re all going on holiday again anyway. And now that we can work from the café, pub or park – you can absolutely wear these things in the “office”.

The Stone Island Bermuda shorts

If you want to be a bit more moderate in your short endeavours this year, perhaps a simpler twill cargo pair is more your bag. As you can see with the way we have styled them, these are more your everyday, weekend-trip-to-the-shops, walk-the-dog pair of shorts. Indeed, they may just become your most essential item.

The skinnier AMI PARIS denim pair

Were you one of those skinny-jean blokes who, when faced with a stint in the sun would refuse to buy a pair of cotton shorts and simply cut up said jeans in a bid to hold onto your precious irreverent style? Perhaps, then, you are a slightly older, more mature man who has similar fashion tastes, but a less gung ho approach to dressing. In that case, these shorts, and this look, is absolutely for you.

The Tropicana-style LOEWE shorts

If the fiery, bold design of these shorts did not give you enough indication as to how and where they should be worn, then the name should firm things up. LOEWE’s collab with the boutique that was at the forefront of island style from 1972 to 2000 does not require you to be in Ibiza to wear these, mind. But a bit of water, warm sun and a freezing cold cocktail wouldn’t harm things.
