THE JOURNAL

Effortlessly channel British and American urban style with the capsule collection of tees and sweats.
Here at MR PORTER, we like to see ourselves as a curator of the world’s best brands and products, pulling together a select edit of the items that reflect our opinion of what makes a stylish life. But we are also rather partial to an exclusive collection. So, when the opportunity comes along to help create something that doesn’t already exist, we often jump at the chance. Working with brands that share our aesthetic to make unique pieces allows us to express ourselves, injects freshness into our offering and leads us to have meaningful conversations with designers. Which brings us nicely to our exclusive capsule with king of US contemporary cool, rag & bone.
Of the collection, the brand says: “[Founder and chief brand officer] Marcus Wainwright has always celebrated the brand through the mashup of different aesthetics and contrast, such as military vs sport; British tailoring vs American workwear; uptown vs downtown, masculine vs feminine… The capsule draws from the English roots of the brand while adding a New York edge.”
Best of both worlds

This sentiment is expressed starkly on this soft cotton-jersey graphic T-shirt, emblazoned with side-by-side images of London Underground’s Leicester Square platform and New York’s Grand Central station subway. Following a similar theme is this white tee, which combines two iconic landmarks – the Empire State Building and Big Ben – in a collage, along with the coordinates of each of the brand’s flagship stores in both cities. You know, just in case you get lost on the way to pick up some more pieces (and you’ve forgotten your MR PORTER login). As winter approaches – but before it gets too cold for countless layers – these tees work well beneath a long, smart wool coat. “Ultimately these are simple T-shirts but the visual representation ties directly back to how the rag & bone brand was born,” the label says. “Contrasting worlds and influences smashed together.”
Neon dreams

You can also see the New York edge on this graphic crew-neck sweatshirt, perhaps the most striking piece in the collection. Clearly inspired by the neon signs that punctuate the streets of New York City at night, it brings a welcome hint of adventure and, dare we say, sleaze to your weekend outfit – especially if you’re having a late one. You might wish to pare back the bright lights of this graphic design a bit, so opt for some straight-leg jeans by Acne Studios and a pair of white sneakers from Common Projects. If you’re looking to bolster your T-shirt collection, there is a version of this with short sleeves, too. Although we wouldn’t mind if you invested in both.
No dress code

Of course, you might be a subtler kind of chap who doesn’t wish to make a statement with his clothing. May we suggest, then, this black hoodie. In a world where dress codes are increasingly a thing of the past, the hoodie has gone from an item suitable solely for the couch at home to a layer you can wear, well, just about anywhere (within reason. Check the wedding invitation before you rock up in this). And, given that it’s lined with fleece-back cotton jersey, it will serve you well in colder months, whether you wear it with chinos or jeans.
Don’t sweat it

You could also wear it with the matching sweatpants. This is a decidedly more casual look, one that’s definitely suitable for a day spent hungover at home, or for a trip to the gym or your local shop. But when teamed with a pair of vibrant sneakers, and you can afford to go big with your footwear given the dark state of your outfit, it’s a look worth showing off.
