THE JOURNAL
Ah, smart casual. The ubiquitous and yet undefinable dress code that has stricken fear into the heart of many a man. What exactly does it mean? In a way, the whole concept is such a cliché that you could be forgiven for assuming that it had died a death long ago. Isn’t the idea of smart casual just a little… passé?
While the name may feel old hat, all stylish men know that some form of smart casual – some middle ground between sweatpants and suit and tie – is the way forward for today’s way of living. There is less delineation between home and office, weekday and weekend. Most of the time, we need to be “always on” – looking good and ready for action (and for running into anyone), but not looking like we tried too hard. We are still wearing smart casual, we just wear it a little differently.
Perhaps it’s time to redefine smart casual for the modern man. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, we’ve put together a few looks that we think do just that, which we hope will provide a little inspiration when you next raid the dressing up box (or the MR PORTER shelves).
01. The business trip
When travelling, a degree of comfort is necessary (a long-haul flight in stiff denim is as good as self-flagellation). But wherever we’re going, we don’t want to turn up looking like a crumpled old bag – and that’s especially true if travelling for work.
The first decision, then, is a pair of soft and loosely structured trousers, such as these from Nili Lotan (wool allows for movement without immediate creasing). We’ve paired them with a simple striped shirt from UMIT BENAN B+ and jersey sweater by TOM FORD, layering a Drake’s bandana under the collar to bring some playful flair to an otherwise classic look. A horn-buttoned Brunello Cucinelli mac is easy to throw on (and to stuff into a roomy TOM FORD leather tote, along with your laptop and overnight items if needed). The footwear of choice? FERRAGAMO loafers, of course, which here echo the black leather and silver-tone hardware of a Mulberry belt. And a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch shows you mean business.

02. The casual creative office
The work wardrobe has evolved over the past few decades to encompass WFH fits and the consciously no-rules cool of city startups and design agencies. Even for those among us whose jobs usually require a shirt and tie, there are occasions that blur the boundaries (weekend work anyone? We know it happens). For this we suggest a crisp white shirt with an unexpected pattern or detailing, like this embroidered example from Simone Rocha. Worn loose over a pair of contemporary straight-leg trousers by Marni, all you need is a Burberry bomber jacket to top it off (a staple for relaxed but unscruffy dressing). Make the shoes smart leather, but Marni’s chunky lug sole keeps things from feeling stuffy. We’ve gone for a slimmer LOEWE tote here, and simple silver jewellery by Hatton Labs and Tom Wood. Crisp and professional.

03. The weekend walk
Care to take a turn around the park? Sure, we’re a million miles from Regency assembly halls and pleasure gardens, but take a look at your local row of independent shops or that cult coffee place by the canal and it’ll be confirmed that we still love to strut our stuff on the weekend for all to see. We might just be running errands or perusing a gallery, but we don’t want to be caught short looking un-put-together. An absolute fail-safe combination for such occasions, we’ve layered Loro Piana’s heavy cotton coat over a chic hoodie from The Row, a Loro Piana shirt and Federico Curradi’s white wide-leg cords. Vintage-inspired sneakers from Berluti are good for leisurely strolls and, of course, a pair of Jacques Marie Mage shades (to hide your eyes during that all-important people watching). The neutral colour-blocking base means a bold Bottega Veneta bag can be a talking point as well as easily holding anything you pick up during the day.

04. The evening engagement
Whether it’s Michelin stars or wine bars, the most sought-after spots in town usually lean towards the looser end of smart casual. However, you should still show you’ve made an effort. The smart element for these nighttime looks can come from luxe materials, texture and volume. An Isabel Marant brushed mohair-blend sweater will ensure you’re pleasant to rub shoulders with, but we’ve contrasted with a leather blouson from Balenciaga to give the ensemble interest and edge. We’ve teamed with wide-leg LOEWE khakis, left long (to “puddle”) over Our Legacy square-toed boots and finished with a button-quilted Maison Margiela bag in polished maroon leather. A chunky silver ring and stacked chains from Tom Wood make the whole look evening appropriate.
