Five Mr P. Pieces You Need This Summer, According To Our Style Director

Words by The MR PORTER Team

When your job title is Style Director, is it any wonder your sartorial wisdom is in such high demand? Mr Olie Arnold, who fills the post at MR PORTER, is naturally our first port of call for any clothing-related concerns, from the everyday to the unusual. Which sneakers look best with cargo trousers? Can I wear two prints at the same time? And how, exactly, does one put on a utility harness?

To all these queries and more, Mr Arnold can provide a definitive answer in a flash. So when we were devising a list of summer staples from our own label, Mr P., who better to call upon? It helps, of course, that he has had a guiding hand in creating our private collection, so he knows the ins and outs of the line-up better than most. These are the five pieces on his warm-weather Wish List.

01. The high-top sneaker

“The Larry high-top is a truly classic sneaker,” says Mr Arnold. “Here, we’ve given it a premium upgrade in brown suede – it’s definitely a refined take, but we wanted it to suit everyday wear. The result? Superb summer sneakers that go with absolutely everything.”

02. The swim shorts

“Now for something a little different. Patterned with a nice play on a traditional check, these squiggly print swimmers are the perfect pool-to-bar shorts (yes, you can wear them out of the water, too). For extra style points, team with the matching camp-collar shirt for lunch or drinks.”

03. The cargo trousers

“In summer, I like to pack away my jeans and opt for something more laid-back when the temperature drops off. These cargo trousers are made from selvedge fabric, which makes them tougher and more resilient than usual, and are the ideal cut for keeping it relaxed, but always sharp.”

04. The garment-dyed T-shirt

“I love the feel of garment-dyed T-shirts. They have a softness that you usually find only with vintage pieces. It means they’re ready to wear straight out of the bag. I’ll have these in lots of colours, but once I get a bit of a tan, this coral pink will be my go-to.”

05. The suede jacket

“Trucker jackets are one of the most iconic menswear staples around, but they’re usually made from more utilitarian fabrics. One crafted from buttery nubuck suede is a real treat, then. And the rich red will turn heads wherever you go. Perfect for summer posing, if that’s your thing.”
