THE JOURNAL

Somehow, we are three-quarters of the way through 2022, but you could be forgiven for thinking it’s the 1990s. Nylon, the fabric that defined the decade, is back. First introduced to luxurywear by Ms Miuccia Prada (and a fabric that continues to be a staple for the brand), nylon is practical, but can also smart and sophisticated. From sneakers to bags and outerwear, here are our nylon picks for AW22.
01.
The cool Snow Peak poncho

For a waterproof yet sophisticated poncho, the Japanese brand Snow Peak has you covered. Founded by the mountaineer Mr Yukio Yamai, Snow Peak has provided camping equipment and the finest Gorpcore pieces since the 1950s. This windproof nylon poncho will keep you dry and stylish. It has a hood and a handy front pocket to keep your essentials dry, too.
02.
The practical Porter-Yoshida & Co backpack

For the man who has to walk or cycle to work, a waterproof backpack is a sensible investment. This green military-inspired bag by Porter-Yoshida & Co has been crafted in Japan from hard-wearing, waterproof nylon to ensure your belongings stay dry on your commute.
03.
The bright Acne Studios gilet

Acne Studios has a knack of nailing brightly coloured items that are at the same time low key and easy to style. This Osal padded gilet is made from a nylon and Lyocell blend and comes in a pumpkin-orange shade that is perfect for gloomy autumn. Wear it over a sweater or hoodie or under a jacket.
04.
The comfy Norbit by Hiroshi Nozawa cargo pants

The Japanese know how to do nylon well, as these trousers prove. Cargo pants have been gaining popularity with the Y2K crowd recently. This pair by Norbit by Hiroshi Nozawa in collaboration with Throwing Fits, and exclusive to MR PORTER, have a pleasingly relaxed fit. They are waterproof, comfy and functional – perfect for drizzly autumn days.
05.
The electric-blue Balenciaga sneakers

Blue, blue, electric blue… the colour of Mr David Bowie’s room is having a moment this season, and for good reason. Despite being a bright tone, it goes with almost everything. Mr Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga’s creative director, loves a good blue (see his 2019 Ikea-inspired bag or the catsuit worn by Ms Kim Kardashian). These chunky Track.3 mesh and nylon sneakers will brighten up any outfit. They come artfully scuffed so you can avoid that I’ve-got-brand-new-sneakers look.
