THE JOURNAL

The season’s most compelling clothing is soft and sumptuous, not stiff and stuffy. As we move towards the warmer months, we can bid adieu to silk linings and bulky padding in favour of pieces that wear beautifully and will turn more than a few heads. Read on for our favourite matching separates to collect for spring and summer. The looks give excellent bang for buck – wear together or break apart for endless combinations.
01. The embellished Kartik Research blazer

With a floral pattern inspired by millennia-old designs, this cotton blazer from Indian brand Kartik Research earns it’s “heritage” badge handily. Cut for a comfortable, loose fit, worn with the matching trousers, it’s an artful choice for a wedding guest, perfect for demonstrating one’s individuality in a sea of penguins.

02. The perfect striped BODE shirt

About as simple as a piece from this brand gets, the Namesake shirt from BODE features a minimal stripe and two embroidered logos. Boxy and breathable, it looks fantastic with the matching shorts – we’re seeing this worn with aplomb on the deck of a yacht, perhaps – but would pair with jeans just as beautifully.

03. The seersucker Stòffa overshirt

If you’re going to wear something white, why not push the boat all the way out? Stòffa’s seersucker set is an elegant and artsy proposition for a garden party or trek through the souk. Yes, you will have to be careful around children and red wine, but that’s a small price to pay for cutting such a striking figure.

04. The unstructured Auralee jacket

OK, so we said these pieces wouldn’t be lined, but here’s a single exception, for which we hope you will forgive us. This Auralee blazer is simply the perfect piece for so many occasions you might have on your calendar. The Super 120s wool is smooth and light for the season, but the lining ensures you won’t get overly chilly when the sun goes down. Pair with the (non)matching trousers for an elegant wabi-sabi look.

05. The embroidered Kardo chore jacket

Talk about a soft separate that can be worn endlessly. This cotton chore jacket with hand-appliqued florals by Kardo is a versatile piece that can be worn as a spring/summer jacket with your everyday apparel or with its matching shorts for a visually interesting punch every time. We love it as a matching set, but don’t save it for only special matching occasions – it deserves to be seen.

06. The spot-on UMIT BENAN B+ button-down shirt

Crisp cotton-poplin is the fabric of choice for men who want to look fresh and clean while still staying cool. We love this shirt from UMIT BENAN B+, which is produced on a small scale to ensure each piece is absolutely right. As it’s a light blue shirt, it can basically be worn every which way, but the designer also makes some cotton-poplin drawstring shorts in a complementary darker blue and we think they will look pretty fantastic worn together, don’t you?
07. The open-knit A Kind of Guise shirt

We’ve been big fans of knit shirts for a few seasons now. They are vintage-inspired and texturally appealing in one perfect package. This one is crafted from linen and Tencel and feature mother-of-pearl buttons for a fancy little wink. A Kind of Guise hasn’t produced a matching set of shorts, but its embroidered cotton drawstrings are an ideal substitute.
