The Sneaker Drop: The Big New Releases From Nike X Sacai And New Balance X Aimé Leon Dore

Words by Mr Jim Merrett

7 February 2022

You’ve heard of the “difficult second album”; well, February is the difficult second month. It’s dark, cold and, as Punxsutawney Phil last week confirmed, spring still feels like a long way off. In short, we’re not out of the woods yet. It is, however, the shortest month, plus, you’re already a week into it, and therefore even closer to pay day, so it’s not all bad. And there’s also no shortage of standout sneakers to arrive on MR PORTER’s digital shoe aisle, including new offerings from Nike X Sacai and New Balance X Aimé Leon Dore. Quick, grab your trolley.

VaporWaffle by Nike X Sacai

If you had to identify a sneaker that best captures these strange times that we find ourselves in, the Nike X Sacai VaporWaffle would be it. And not just because it’s pretty mixed up, presenting a mashup of the Beaverton sportswear brand’s greatest hits. It is also the shoe that you will find worn by of this generation’s greatest minds. Or at least on their feet. As such, drops typically sell out sharpish. So, to get a pair in this pared-back colourway – perhaps the best way to appreciate this silhouette, since there’s a lot going on here – you best be on your toes.

993 by New Balance X Aimé Leon Dore

First teased in Aimé Leon Dore’s AW21 lookbook on the feet of foodie rapper Action Bronson in a colourway popularly known as “beef and broccoli”, this collab finally lands on MR PORTER this month. This second iteration comes in a neutral tone, with purple, black and blue details. Launched in 2008, the original 993 not only represented the reboot of the cult 990 line, it marked a move toward premium production, made in the US, as proudly emblazoned here on the tongue. ALD’s update brings the New York brand’s trademark new-age prep to this much-loved shoe. Highly sought-after, don’t hang about for this one.

Dunk Hi 1985 SP by Nike

Developed under the working title “College Color High”, the Dunk was originally designed by Mr Peter Moore, who also penned the Air Jordan 1, with colour in mind. The two-tone leather uppers made it the perfect canvas for showing your allegiance to your school’s sports team. And while Nike’s recent Acid Wash reworkings of this mid-1980s campus staple stay true to the silhouette of the iconic basketball shoe, the colour schemes are way beyond the boundary lines. With bright blue laces to go – or perhaps clash – with the orange camo panels, this is a high-top to hold court.
