THE JOURNAL

“You wouldn’t last an hour in my shoe,” Dizzee Rascal said on his Mercury Prize-winning 2003 debut Boy In Da Corner, which introduced grime to a wider audience. The shoe in question? The Air Force 1, obviously. A sneaker that has grabbed the imagination like few others, it has been endorsed and updated by everyone from Mr Travis Scott to Nelly, who wears a 10.5 “floppy with ankle socks”. Other shoes are available, many of them made by Mr Kanye West, who has two new offerings here. MR PORTER may have trainers by the truckload, but they won’t hang around for long. So, as Dizzee Rascal puts it, “best to act like Forrest Gump, best to run”.

Yeezy 700V1 Wash Orange by adidas Originals

As a father of four, Mr Kanye West’s move into the dad shoe arena was perhaps to be expected. The original Yeezy 700, which has had a lot of love of late, isn’t perhaps the sort of sneaker to sport while tending the barbecue, though. The new Wash Orange colourway, which builds on the Wave Runner edition released earlier this year, is spicy, but spilling hot sauce on it would be unforgivable. The bulbous tangerine Boost midsole packs a punch against the grey upper while the pitch-black outsole and black, teal and blue across the toebox and midfoot, as well as 3M accents, make quite a statement. And they’re comfy, should you want to wear them on the school run.

Yeezy 350V2 MX Oat by adidas Originals

If we had to read into the latest iteration of West’s laid-back 350 V2 Beluga shoe, we’d say the producer and rapper turned designer has seen some changes in his life. This MX Oat edition is certainly more colourful than its forerunners. (In other news, Ms Kim Kardashian retained the couple’s minimal Hidden Hills mansion in their recent divorce, which may or may not have had some influence on the way West’s shoes are going.) The eye-catching Primeknit upper is vaguely reminiscent of those dynamic sand executive-toy art pieces of the 1990s, or an accident in the Alum Bay gift shop, offset by the biomorphic white Boost midsole.

Air Force 1 Mid QS by Nike

Basketball shoes pivoting into other fields is nothing new – adidas’s Superstar became the iconic sneaker of 1980s hip-hop while Nike’s Dunk enjoyed a second coming as a skate shoe. By the mid-1990s, the Air Force 1 had had its day on the court. The mid-sized model gave it a new lease of life outside the sport – and a jewelled Swoosh. The Air Force 1 has since supplanted the Superstar in the affections of rappers, led by Brooklynite Jay-Z, who gave the shoe a shoutout in “Can I Live II”. A mainstay in all parts of New York, this particular incarnation might feel more at home in the Bronx, given it comes in the colours of the Yankees.
