Seven Springtime Sweats To Wear Anywhere

Words by Lucy Kingett

7 March 2023

It’s been a long time since Mr Karl Lagerfeld said “sweatpants are a sign of defeat”, and boy have things changed. As a society, we have come to recognise the true value of comfort. No longer relegated to the gym or Sunday sofa sessions, sweatpants and a hoodie are undeniably the jeans and a T-shirt of the modern age. So, while the season of staying indoors may be coming slowly to an end, we still need to make sure our loungewear rotation is sharp enough to take us anywhere. We’ve rounded up our pick of the best seasonal sweatshirts, hoodies and sweatpants below.

01.

The super-versatile Mr P. hoodie

A great-quality, plain hoodie is a basic that every man (and woman, for that matter) needs. But we implore you to choose something other than black, navy or grey. The new neutrals are subtle natural tones, so this sage green example from Mr P., with its ever-so-slightly contrasting ribbed trims and drawstring, is just the ticket.

02.

The TOM FORD cashmere sweatpants

Sweats don’t have to mean scruffy, and they don’t have to mean foregoing a little luxury, either. These tapered cream cashmere sweatpants from TOM FORD are a refined take on tracksuit bottoms, with a classic mid-rise and slim silhouette. Team with fresh sneakers or socks and clog sandals.

03.

The AMIRI logo sweatshirt

California-born brand AMIRI knows how to give good logo, as demonstrated with this powder pink sweatshirt. The label’s name has been reworked into retro lettering and weathered according to its signature deconstructed aesthetic, which is further articulated through lightly distressed trims.

04.

The Brunello Cucinelli half-zip

For sweats that lean just on the right side of smart, Brunello Cucinelli has your back. This cosy blue marl half-zip sweatshirt has a traditional, loose fit, meaning it’s great for layering and will pair with jeans or chinos just as easily as sweatpants or even shorts. A reliable all-rounder that will take you well past spring.

05.

The Acne Studios subtle logo hoodie

A byword for contemporary Scandinavian cool, Acne Studios does a great line in expertly crafted basics based on a palette of well-chosen colours and bearing the brand’s quietly humorous blank face logo – a signifier of Swedish level-headed contentment. The creamy-soft sunny yellow, heavy handle and relaxed fit of this hoodie make it a down-day essential.

06.

The Stone Island garment-dyed sweatshirt

Another brand that knows what to do with colour is Stone Island, which has developed over 60,000 dye recipes in its specialist lab. This staple crewneck sweater, with the label’s iconic patch on the arm, comes in a range of garment-dyed hues, but we love this gentle sky blue for the new season.

07.

The SKY HIGH FARM motif sweatpants

New to MR PORTER, SKY HIGH FARM is the brainchild of artist Mr Dan Colen, who created the brand to support its namesake non-profit farm in Hudson Valley, NY. Upcycling and playful prints are the name of the game, like with these Ally Bo sweatpants, covered in a fruity night-sky motif. The low crotch and tapered leg give these a streetwear feel – top it off with the matching hoodie for a full fit.
