THE JOURNAL

April is a funny old month, a sort of placeholder, not quite summer yet, but not really much of spring. Days can go either way, swinging from freezing cold to boiling hot in the time it takes you to undo a cufflink. This means it is a pain to dress for, quite frankly. Take a lesson from the men, below, who approached the task with fortitude and won the sartorial battle.
Mr Kim Nam-joon

RM, aka Mr Kim Nam-joon, is one of the perma-young members of K-pop outfit BTS, which means that, for some sections of the world’s population, he is a god on Earth. He certainly exudes divine nonchalance in this picture, his hand slid into one pocket of his beige, high-waisted chinos, into which is tucked a pristine white T-shirt, Mr Marlon Brando-style. The tone of the trousers works in harmony with green of the chore jacket and the matching sneakers. The addition of the red beanie, sunglasses and whistle pendant around his neck ensure that this laid-back look still attracts the attention a K-pop star expects and deserves.

Mr Rami Malek

Considering Mr Rami Malek has acquired a Golden Globe, an Oscar and starred in a film that grossed nearly a billion dollars, it is quite surprising to see him just wandering through JFK Airport, bag in hand. You wouldn’t have seen Mr Richard Burton doing that! But that is part of the actor’s charm; he has an everyman air. And his clothes here seem to follow the same line: they look like the clothes of anyone at first glance. Though look a bit closer and you’ll see that it isn’t quite so. They are that little bit chicer, that little bit better quality. The patent-leather Derby shoes are shined to perfection, the melange-wool trousers maintain a sharp crease and the brown of the overcoat adds some texture to the monochrome look. The Gladstone bag with a gold zip is the cherry on the icing of this particularly stylish cake.

Mr Don Cheadle

Mr Don Cheadle’s latest movie, Avengers: Endgame, grossed $1.2bn at the box office. In its opening weekend. Here he is about to go on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Los Angeles on 11 April and he looks wholly unflappable. Which is, perhaps, unsurprising in this circumstance. Part of that is down to his to his too-cool-for-school demeanour and partly down to his light-blue tech-twill suit, and belt, from Prada, plus the box-fresh white sneakers, of course. It is the sort of outfit that an ordinary mortal, as opposed to a celebrity, would be hard pressed to pull off. Try wearing that out and about in London or New York as a civilian and you’d quickly look a little weather-worn. But then, we’re not Mr Don Cheadle.

Mr Isaac Hempstead Wright

The actor Mr Isaac Hempstead Wright has many things going for him: youth, Game Of Thrones mega-stardom, élan to spare and the fact that he favours our in-house brand, Mr P. Here he is looking very chic indeed, and like Mr Cheadle, about to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He is in head-to-toe navy, in a wool-blend blazer, merino rollneck sweater and slim-fit worsted trousers with a pair of Jacques leather penny loafers. The tortoiseshell specs are a winner, too, and make him look like a French New Wave intellectual – and who wouldn’t want to look like that?

Mr Troye Sivan

Mr Troye Sivan, the South African-born Australian singer, has one of those physiques that means he can wear pretty much anything and still look good. We would describe the 23-year-old as “rangy”. And indeed, he wears his dinner suit and bow tie at the Clash de Cartier launch dinner in Paris with brio. The trousers are slim-fitting, as is the jacket, making him look tall, elegant and not a little bit haughty. We approve.

Mr Alexander Skarsgård

Here’s Mr Alexander Skarsgård, the former MR PORTER cover star, going about his business – with a cat? – in SoHo, New York. What he has done is not easy – and we don’t just mean getting the hissing feline into the box – but here he has nailed the off-duty look. The former Tarzan pairs two shades of brown in his rollneck and chore jacket, which are then given further fillip by his tortoiseshell shades. His bottom half is then a study in navy, the jeans, the woven belt and the sneakers. Breaking the outfit up like this means he avoids looking like a bean pole, for he is 6ft 4in tall. His outfit says, “Don’t bother me, please”, but if someone did, they would not find him wanting for movie-star style.

Mr Niels Schneider

Oh, look it’s that all-round nice chap, Mr Niels Schneider, at the French Film Festival at the French Institute of Athens. The French-Canadian actor provides a masterclass in April dressing. The sneakers, jeans and top are all casual and perfectly suited to a rise in the mercury. Though he covers his bases with the addition of a brown, broad-lapelled cord jacket and a pair of round sunglasses. He looks a man at ease.

Mr Cary Fukunaga

Mr Cary Fukunaga is an American director, producer and screenwriter who dresses in a way that is invariably pitch-perfect. Here he is at GoldenEye in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the former home of Mr Ian Fleming. From the tan penny loafers on this feet to the slicked-back hair on his head, he looks top-drawer. The fitted blue suit and white shirt give him an air of gravitas and smartness which is leavened by the ankle-displaying trousers and a white pocket square marbled with a streak of green. It is an outfit that says, “Business or pleasure, I’m ready for you.”
