The Coats Keeping Us Warm This Autumn

Words by The MR PORTER Team

1 November 2018

The MR PORTER Team’s pick of the outerwear to get cosy with this season.

Autumn has arrived in all its goose-bump inducing painfulness. The wind, the rain, the endless applications of moisturiser necessary to prevent us turning into dehydrated scarecrows… It is all a bit of a pain, really, isn’t it? And yet, it provides those of us not in possession of a car and driver with an opportunity denied us in the summer: to crown our outfit with a coat. To help you choose the very finest to see you through the long winter months ahead, we asked the MR PORTER team to choose their favourites.

I just got back from South Korea and am not only in the middle of a K-Pop epiphany, but also looking forward to the incoming grungy mood of SS19’s collections. Perhaps it is a lot of waffle, but, well, it is as good an excuse as any to plump for this natty pink (!) coat from New York’s Sies Marjan, which I will wear with this simple, yet drily humorous hoodie from Balenciaga. The trapper hat is probably there because of an “All Apologies” moment in one of Seoul’s dingiest karaoke bars. If I had to add something else, then, it would be a pair of oh-so Mr Kurt Cobain sunglasses from Sun Buddies. Yes, I am 34 years old, and this is all fine.

Winter is a curse in many ways: the cold, the wet, the endless Christmas parties with endless small talk to boring people. It would try the patience of a clam. But, and there is a but, readers, it does allow you to dress. And dress properly. And, being English, I don’t think you can dress properly without an overcoat, and if there is a more charming one than this double-breasted number in Prince of Wales check, then I would like to know about it. So I might still enjoy the country air on weekends away and not run the risk of keeling over, I will wear this thick Moncler Genius rollneck sweater. It is thicker than double cream and a lot warmer. I will accompany all this with a Horizn Studios suitcase so I have the means to shed the coat and jumper and clear off to somewhere warm. This case is capacious and has lots of lovely internal pockets and dividers, so I can fit my coat, sweater and all my usual luggage in it. Plus, the wheels are specially designed to be quieter than a church mouse, so I can disappear into the sunset without anyone noticing.

I’m addicted. This will be the third Monitaly coat I’ve bought this year! Their combination of classic style, great fabrics and a modern cut is so good. Add to it a checked scarf from Dries Van Noten for a bit of super-soft colour and a pair of our new Mr P. shearling boots should mean I’m pretty impervious to anything this winter…

One of the best bits about living in New York is that there are always elegant dos, year round – sun, sleet, hail, rain or snow. But that can test the breadth of one’s closet. Even if I have a couple of trusty winter coats for work and if I can steel myself to make it out for the holiday parties, I’m always left feeling a bit like the guy in Mr Whit Stillman’s Metropolitan whose sole, light coat leaves him with a bit of impostor syndrome. I imagine that he (and I) would feel rather differently if we bopped around the city this season in this glorious velvet-tripped cashmere coat from Mr Haider Ackermann’s last collection with Berluti – an exclusive to MR PORTER. This winter-bright turtleneck is probably festive enough for a company holiday party, and for the drinks with friends to follow. And these toe-cap boots from Edward Green are both ideal for tromping through slippery slush and elegant enough to look like they belong at any party.

OK, so parts of the UK have been just been hit with a sheet of snow, just a few weeks after temperatures hit 26°C. Only one thing for it then – an emergency winter coat purchase. This season I will head straight for classic style from Brunello Cucinelli, like this, the brand’s cashmere navy peacoat. It’s such an easy style to wear and dances comfortably between casual and more formal. Wear it with a pair of distressed Japanese denim jeans from Fabric-Brand & Co, and a striped cotton-jersey rollneck from Mr P. and you have the perfect start for those laid-back winter weekends.

Several years into self-sufficient adulthood, I’m proud to say that my winter wardrobe is in fine fettle. Gone are the days when I’d face rain, snow and bitter cold dressed in the same, tattered old bomber jacket. I now own no fewer than two formal overcoats, a thick down jacket for sub-zero conditions and something made out of lurid Gore-Tex should I ever find myself halfway up a hill in the middle of a storm. Not only does this help to ensure that I’ll not freeze to death for want of appropriate clothing, it also allows me to choose a new coat based on rather more whimsical concerns than staying warm. Concerns such as: how will I look while standing outside a pub? This puppytooth overcoat from A.P.C. answers that question in style. It’s got something of the old school East End barrow boy about it, a look I’ll be emphasising – read: hamming up – with a Polo Ralph Lauren sweater vest, cuffed denim and brogue boots. (Flat cap not included.)

The thing with shearling coats is that they are an investment; both financially and stylistically. Too long and you’ll look like a football manager, too light in colour and it will limit your outfit opportunities. Luckily, this shorter black version from Mr P. is a real wardrobe workhorse as it complements almost everything, so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Pair them with these upscale jogging pants and fine gauge knit rollneck for a modern look that will keep you snug through the winter months.
