The Five Pairs Of Shoes Every Man Needs This Summer

From espadrilles to bright white sneakers, treat your feet to some cool and comfortable footwear this season.

Yes, we know you’ve spent the past six-odd months in hibernation, huddled indoors, and are now breathlessly excited about heading off to somewhere warm for a few weeks. But don’t forget that your feet have been working hard, and need a holiday too. What’s more, you don’t actually need to take flight to give them one – merely equip them with the proper gear. Below we’ve collected a list of the five shoes that should be in every man’s wardrobe as the weather heats up, as well as provided some recommendations as to what to wear them with. Choose a pair and skip blithely off into the summer – your feet will thank you for it.

THE TENNIS SNEAKERS

The simple white sneaker shape, exemplified by adidasStan Smiths, has become such a perennial favourite in the past few years that it almost seems superfluous to recommend you should pick some up for summer. But the fact is, if you don’t have some in your wardrobe already, you should – a minimal design like the above from Swedish brand Spalwart will work as well by the seaside as it will with chinos and a shirt, or even a summer suit. Complement the vintage feel of this particular pair with a washed chore jacket from US brand Simon Miller.

THE ESPADRILLES

Espadrilles are classic beach footwear, originating in the sun-kissed region of Valencia, Spain. But thanks to various designers’ updating of the paradigm, they’re also a rather stylish option for city strolling in hot weather. This camo-print pair from Valentino offers a fun weekend option that could be worn raffishly with some cuffed chinos, or, if you’re anywhere near the water, with a pair of navy shorts. For the latter option, we like this particular variation from Acne Studios, for their cool and breezy wide-leg fit.

THE DRIVING SHOES

Tod’s classic Gommino driving shoes are of course excellent for driving, as their name suggests, but we always like to imagine them being worn by an Italian gentleman padding around his villa at the weekend. The tawny colour of this leather pair will work wonderfully with beige, brown and off-white clothing – try them with this slub linen shirt from Boglioli and feel every inch the off-duty Agnelli scion.

THE BOAT SHOES

The boat shoe is a classic that never really goes out of style, particularly if you’re the kind of man that takes his cues from the Ivy Look (or, of course, spends a lot of time on deck). However, this season, brand-of-the-moment Gucci has served up a spectacular take on the style, reinforced with lug soles for an effect that is halfway between high school and high fashion. Adopt a spirit of irreverance, and wear them with a pair of frayed-hem, cropped jeans from Japanese brand Remi Relief.

THE SLIDES

Who’d have thought there’d come a day where you’d read the following sentence: don’t board a plane anywhere this summer without a pair of Bottega Veneta pool slides. Yet here we are, and there it is. In fact, following Raf Simons’ collaboration with adidas a few seasons back, everyone seems to be having a go at this most humble (yet pleasingly simple) type of summer footwear. The Bottega version, with its signature intrecciato cross straps, merely happens to be our current favourite. Wear them proudly with a pair of swim shorts by Tom Ford, but just remember they’re partially leather, not rubber, so don’t forget to kick them off before you start paddling about in the shallows.
