THE JOURNAL

How the likes of Messrs Pedro Pascal, Dave Franco and Bill Skarsgård react to the arrival of autumn .
September is one of those months that fashion types like to refer to as “transitional”, in that it marks a transition between summer and winter and their corresponding wardrobes. In special, bumper issues of glossy fashion magazines, we’re encouraged to bid a fond farewell to our linen shirts, to say arrivederci to our breezily unstructured tailoring and to welcome knitwear, tweed and lug-soled boots into our lives once more. Of course, the wise man knows to take this advice with a hefty pinch of salt. The fashion calendar might operate on a strictly seasonal schedule, but nature rarely sticks to the script.
That much was demonstrably true of this September, which – in MR PORTER’s twin hometowns of London and New York, at least – offered just as many opportunities for basking in the sun as did all of July and August combined. All of which is to say that while autumn may be upon us, meteorologically speaking at least, you’ll have to wait just a little while longer for the fruits of the new season to fall. Check back next month for our October edition of On The Town, by which time the clocks will have gone back and our celebrity style-setters will, we expect, be more fully embracing their winter wardrobes. Until then, here’s how they navigated their way through the sartorially uncertain waters of September.
MR PEDRO PASCAL

Mr Pedro Pascal at the Arianne Phillips: Dressing The Part film screening, New York, 7 September
Another day, another Kingsman event. This time, it was the New York screening of Arianne Phillips: Dressing The Part, a MR PORTER-produced documentary on the renowned stylist and costume director. Among the stars in attendance was Mr Pedro Pascal, who appears in the latest Kingsman movie as Statesman’s Agent Whiskey. He was wearing the same double-breasted “Arthur” Kingsman suit that Mr Mark Strong wore to the premiere just 11 days later (see below), but in a radically different fashion, choosing an eye-catching shirt, losing the tie and opting for blue suede penny loafers over black leather Oxfords. We don’t tend to think of the double-breasted suit as a very versatile garment. These two men are out to prove otherwise.

MR CHARLIE PLUMMER

Mr Charlie Plummer at the 74th Venice Film Festival, 15 September
Say hello to Mr Charlie Plummer, who was, shockingly, Nucky Thompson’s son in Boardwalk Empire a few years ago. Wasn’t he about nine years old? How quickly they grow up. He’s soon to be reunited with his on-screen father, Mr Steve Buscemi, in the coming-of-age drama Lean On Pete, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this September. The 18-year-old actor marked himself out as rising star at the festival, winning the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Young Actor. Mr Mastroianni was just as well-known for his style as he was for his acting, of course, and in that respect Mr Plummer seems to be heading in the right direction, too. He looked molto di moda at the movie’s Venice photocall, a pop of colourful sock adding an extra dimension to an otherwise minimal outfit.

MR JAMES BAY

Mr James Bay at the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2017, London, 5 September
To the Tate Modern in London for British GQ’s Men Of The Year Awards, a glitzy ceremony at which gongs were handed out to the men who have proven themselves worthy in the eyes of GQ to be named Maverick, Legend, Inspiration, Icon, or, in the evening’s most surprising twist, Woman of the Year. Mr James Bay didn’t win any of the aforementioned, sadly, but for what it’s worth he was our best-dressed guy of the night, pulling off a tricky look with rockstar swagger. As a postscript, might we add how pleased we are to see that he’s finally growing out of his hat phase. It was a nice hat, but these things can come to define you.

MR MARK STRONG

Mr Mark Strong at the Kingsman: The Golden Circle world film premiere, London, 18 September
Do excuse us if you feel we’ve been going on rather a lot about Kingsman lately. The spoof spy franchise’s second outing, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has been doing brisk business at the box office over the past couple of weeks, and as the movie’s official costume partner we’ve had little else on our minds. If you’re a fan of the double-breasted suits, ties, shoes and shirts worn in the movie, the good news is that they can all be purchased on MR PORTER as part of the Kingsman range. Here’s Mr Mark Strong, who plays the tech wizard Merlin, dressed to the nines in his own Kingsman suit at the London premiere.

MR DAVE FRANCO

Mr Dave Franco at The LEGO Ninjago Movie press day, Carlsbad, US, 13 September
As if the more than 60 Lego-themed rides, shows and attractions weren’t enough, visitors to Legoland California also found themselves in with a chance of spotting a real-life celebrity last month, with the amusement park playing host to the global premiere of The Lego Ninjago Movie. Here’s Mr Dave Franco (Bad Neighbours star and younger brother of Mr James Franco), who lends his voice to the movie’s lead character. Legoland California is based in sunny Carlsbad, just north of San Diego, which explains why Mr Franco was able to get away with rocking a short-sleeved shirt and no socks in the middle of September. Actually, to say he merely got away with it isn’t giving him nearly enough credit. There’s a lot to admire here, from the break of his trousers to his choice of Derbies.

MR MICHELE RIONDINO

Mr Michele Riondino at the 74th Venice International Film Festival, 2 September
Laying waste to the Venice Film Festival’s red carpet and its sartorial pretensions was the Italian actor Mr Michele Riondino, in attendance for the premiere of Diva!, a film based on the autobiography of the Italian actor Ms Valentina Cortese. With unruly hair, three-day stubble and a single earring in his left ear, Mr Riondino doesn’t look like a man who is overly concerned with making the “correct” impression among the cinematic establishment. His striped, pyjama-like trousers, which he has paired with navy blue penny loafers, only serve to confirm this. We say, more power to him. Let your freak flag fly. And more power to the Venice Film Festival authorities for letting it happen. Try dressing like this at Cannes and you’d be forcibly removed.

MR LIEV SCHREIBER

Mr Liev Schreiber at the Tom Ford SS18 show, New York, 6 September
Here’s Mr Liev Schreiber attending Tom Ford’s spring 2018 fashion show, which took place in New York this September. One of the best things about fashion week is the way that celebrities who you’d never imagine hanging out together under normal circumstances have to basically sit on each other’s laps. Take Mr Schreiber, for instance, who found himself squeezed in between Dutch lingerie model Ms Doutzen Kroes and none other than the Queen of Funk herself, Ms Chaka Khan. Quite the motley crew. Away from the front row, the actor’s suit – which is by Tom Ford, if you hadn’t already guessed – was given room to breathe. This picture, above, is a good illustration of why the brand’s suits are so popular. Generously cut, with broad lapels and well-structured shoulders, they make a man feel confident.

MR BILL SKARSGÅRD

Mr Bill Skarsgård outside the Jimmy Kimmel studio, Hollywood, California, 5 September
Perhaps the most shocking thing about this year’s blockbuster remake of Mr Stephen King’s horror classic It is just how unrecognisable Mr Bill Skarsgård is as Pennywise. Yes, that’s right: the dapper character you see in this photograph is the same man teaching a new generation of kids to be really, really scared of clowns. The Swedish actor arrived at Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Hollywood wearing a sleek, well put-together outfit of black denim, white T-shirt, leather jacket and chocolate suede Chelsea boots. In place of a red balloon, he accessorised the look with retro D-frame sunglasses and a chunky wristwatch. We prefer him like this.
