THE JOURNAL

What to wear from the new Joseph and MR PORTER capsule collection.
London-based brand Joseph has long been an institution of British style. Founded in the early 1970s by its namesake, the late retail guru Mr Joseph Ettedgui, the business originally comprised a series of multibrand stores, which were among the first to showcase emerging designers such as Margaret Howell, and to bring international brands like Prada and Azzedine Alaïa to the UK. But in 1972, Mr Ettedgui launched the Joseph private label, a range of easy, accessibly priced clothing that filled in the gaps left by his stores’ designer collections. In 2017, the Joseph brand accounts for over 86 per cent of Joseph’s sales, and it’s easy to see why. Combining quality and wearability with a decidedly forward-looking style sensibility, these are clothes that will slot neatly into the everyday wardrobe and refresh it at the same time. As Joseph makes its debut on MR PORTER today, we’re proud to announce that we’ve collaborated with the brand on an exclusive capsule collection of versatile jersey, shirting and outerwear that will see you through summer and then some. Scroll down for our top picks from the capsule, and how to wear them.
THE FENHAM SHIRT
Halfway between an overshirt and a zip-up bomber jacket, Joseph’s Fenham shirt is one of those never-knew-I-needed-it pieces that the brand is so good at. Thanks to its light chambray fabric, it’s a great outer layer for late spring, but will also come in handy on cool summer evenings. Wear it with a pair of the brand’s cotton-linen trousers, which come with a sweatpant-esque elasticated waistband for a sophisticated sporty look.
THE TWILL BOMBER
The bomber jacket is so ubiquitous that we at MR PORTER now almost think of it as a casual alternative to the blazer – it can be worn in the same way, over a white shirt, or over a T-shirt or sweater if you’re going for a more weekend-y look. However you choose to wear it, we would like to draw your attention to the details that make this particular variation from Joseph special, including the slightly sheeny cotton fabric, matte black poppers and exaggerated elasticated waistband, which will give it a particularly pleasing shape around the hips.
THE SUMMER TRENCH
Summer coats are one of this season’s key trends, and this olive-coloured trench from Joseph is one of the standout examples of the form. It comes in what the brand calls its “Rainmac” cotton, that is, a fine twill that will be light and fluid enough to wear even as temperatures soar. Because it’s unlined, it’s also perfect for packing away for travel. While it’s still only warm-ish, wear it with one of Joseph’s striped merino wool sweaters – you can swap it for a T-shirt when the summer gets going properly.
