Whether you want to make a splash or ride with the tide on holiday, Orlebar Brown has got you covered – here's how to find the perfect swimwear to suit your shape, style and surroundings.
Anyone who has ever been to a beach before (ever) should be familiar with the idea that not every seaside punter brings their style A-game on holiday with them. Of course, we can sympathise – sometimes you just need to kick back, relax, and not think too much about the little things, especially when you’re taking a break. But, but, but: beaches and swimming pools are glaringly public places, which means that a laissez faire attitude toward one’s swimwear often results in various unpleasant impressions on other people’s eyeballs. The only considerate thing to do, therefore, is to make sure that you’ve at least got a reasonably flattering pair of swim shorts. To explain how this is done, we consulted with expert Mr Adam Brown, the man behind one of MR PORTER’s favourite swimwear brands, Orlebar Brown. Scroll down for the three searching questions you need to ask yourself before committing to the shorts that will be with you all summer.

Are They Right For Your Height?
“Think about length. If you are very tall then it is really about choosing something from the mid-to-long styles; and if you are short then try something from short- to mid-length. It’s not complicated, just about proportion and balance. If in doubt, go for something mid-length – a good cut-off point for a mid-length (6-inch inseam) short is fractionally above the halfway point between your knee and the start of your inseam.”

Do They Actually, Really Fit You?
“Buying swim shorts is similar to buying trousers; I doubt you would choose a voluminous, oversized pair with an elasticated waistband for daily wear, and an outfit for the beach or pool should be no different. Regardless of your shape, something tailored and well-cut that fits you properly is ultimately more flattering. And note: with the right pair you should only be able to just tuck your fingers inside the waistband of your shorts. If there is room for any more, chances are they’re too loose.”

How Far Can You Go With Colour?
“If you are confused by what colour or print to choose, then think about your skin tone and everyday style. If you are naturally fair then avoid brights and neons; those with darker skin tones can celebrate something vivid. Navy, dark green, slate grey, and (strangely) black are always a safe bet whoever you are. Also, remember that colour and print are a reflection of your personality – natural extroverts will probably carry off a crazy pattern better then those who would rather not be the centre of attention.”
